Meet Nelson Po Hua Yang of Nelsonphyang Creative Studio in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nelson Po Hua Yang.

Nelson, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Taipei Taiwan. I have been involved in art since a young age, and eventually received formal training through schooling. Throughout my professional career, I have worked as an illustrator-designer at a home decor company. I later started my own freelance studio.

I currently focus my work on illustration brand design. I helped a Taiwanese furniture company built a whole identity, from typeface, color pallet, and art direction to gallery work. I also have helped a young start-up clothing brand build a couple products. On the side, I teach children and newer artists how to illustrate because I believe in giving back what I’ve learned and helped the next generation be better. Currently, I’m working towards my goal, which is make Taiwan a good design country, which eventually all the creatives can go and share their stories through art at this small but filled with rich history country.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I consider myself to be lucky to be able to do what I love. I have been fortunate to work as a lead artist for important brands, such as Royallife Furnish and a production designer at Artissimo Designs. Artissimo Designs creates mass produced popular art that is sold in stores, such as Khols, Bed Beth & Beyond, and Target.

One of my career highlights was also having my work selected as a winner to American Illustration. Because of this win, my work was showcased on the American Illustration online gallery, at the gallery show in New York, and was part of the published book that is regarded as one of the top professional publications in the industry.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Nelsonphyang Creative Studio – what should we know?
I am currently working on many upcoming projects. One of the ones I’m most excited about is being the sole artist behind Boba California. This is an expansion off the already successful Labobatory brand. As well as T-Mobile Project that I worked on with Decoded advertising agency.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
