Meet Neha Shaida of Kemp Broadcasting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Neha Shaida.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Neha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in the outer Los Angeles suburb of Hacienda Heights. I got my Bachelor’s in Journalism from UC Irvine and my masters at Cal State Fullerton. I always knew I loved Journalism, talking to people & hearing their stories.

During college, I interned at news stations, newspapers, TV stations, and high fashion designers (all things I loved). During my time interning with a variety of media entities, I realized radio combined my immense love for music and journalism and fell in love with it while at power 106.

Living in Los Angeles, I had the opportunity to work at L.A.’s #1-night show, “the Liftoff” at Power 106. While working at Power, I learned from talents like Justin Credible and DJ Sourmilk everything from producing a show to talking on-air and developing a thriving social media presence, to an insane work ethic. After two years, I moved on to work at BET and TuneIn, where I was able to finetune my skills in the music industry. I knew I didn’t want to give up on my radio dreams and take a normal job so I completely bet on myself & worked odd jobs to make ends meet while fighting for an opportunity. It was a tough time but I knew I wasn’t willing to give up. Eventually, my path led me to my very own radio show in Vegas. I’m now a midday host Monday through Friday.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely, definitely not. Lots and lots of rejection, tears, and moments of hyping myself in the car. Once I realized my love of radio I knew it wouldn’t be an easy path but I also knew I couldn’t give up. My two years at Power were while I was full time in school & working retail. I drove from the OC to LA weekly & spent many lunches in traffic in my car juggling college in the OC, working retail, and rushing over to Burbank to work at Power. At Power, I knew it was important to not just do what was asked of me but go beyond, which I attempted to do each night. I put my blood sweat and tear into that job. After Power I went to BET part-time while ubering after work to make ends meet. It was tough but I refused to give up on working in this industry. The first real job I got after was TuneIn & I drove from the Inland Empire to Venice daily. It was an amazing, amazing experience but I still wanted to be a radio host so continued to learn and pursue those dreams. I would network, reach out to program directors, and do voice work daily. I must have applied to hundreds of jobs. Eventually, my moment came when I got the job in Vegas. It wasn’t an easy road but two degrees, a little bit of debt, hundreds of unpaid hours, many tears, and a lot of experience later I got a dream job!

What else should our readers know?
I’m a mid day on air host at a top 40 radio station in Las Vegas. I’m on air six days a week from 10AM to 3 PM. I’m just beginning my radio journey & hope I continue to grow & expand.

What were you like growing up?
Both my parents are immigrants from India, so growing up was definitely learning to balance both cultures & find out where I fit in. I was one of two Indians in my school & it’s true what they say about representation, as a little girl not seeing anybody that looked like me on TV or around me made me want to be someone else. Being a minority female in this country has so many layers, but as I grew up I found more of myself along the way & loved more of myself along the way. I learned that women don’t have to fit into boxes & we can be multifaceted. You can be Rihanna & Taylor Swift, you can be ridiculously smart & twerk on Friday nights, or stay in and read a book but have a personality as big as Beyonce. I currently have Doja Cat & Ruth Bader Ginsberg on my vision board, so yeah, I’m a pretty multifaceted individual that is very passionate about many, many things.
