Meet Nathan and Sarah Shaw of SHAWthing Productions in Sherman Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan and Sarah Shaw.

Nathan and Sarah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started in 2017 when we first met. Being two creative individuals in a city full of talent, we knew not only the importance of standing out but also giving back! Whilst our love grew for each other, our passion for creating and producing content drew us even closer together, so much so that two years later, we ended up getting married.

After taking the time to enjoy our first year of marriage and putting out over 60 videos on our YouTube Channel ‘SHAWthing’ – 2020 came and well, you know what happened.

Auditions came to a screeching halt, nothing was open and everyone moved online – which prompted us to ask ourselves, what’s next? We couldn’t go out, explore or meet friends and we noticed a surge in young people like ourselves, following their dream of starting their own business – thus, ‘SHAWthing Productions’ became a reality.

We thought starting a business meant being an already established, huge successful brand, a massive sum of money and big team of experts guiding you through it all. However, all it takes is an idea. (Which is one of our company mottos). We did a little research, talked with family and friends and completed the (quite simple) steps of starting our first company.

We completed our website, set up our social media and now, we’re officially open for business!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Predominantly smooth, yes – the struggles were mainly challenges that we simply had to be patient with and eventually overcome. Being a newly married couple, living in Los Angeles and dealing with the financial challenges arising from the current climate, we knew we had to be cautious in the way of starting our business.

Starting any form of business isn’t free, there’s always fees and start-up costs involved, but it wasn’t just the monetary side that we struggled with, funnily enough, it was also the creative side. ‘SHAWthing Productions’ is a branch of our ‘SHAWthing’ brand, essentially a company that produces high-quality videos for the modern digital market. That means not only having the equipment required to do such a thing but also knowing how to use it.

Thankfully, being a lovers of technology, we already had most of the hardware needed to get started, but as we started to acquire new products, that also meant learning new techniques, tricks of the trade and pretty much going back to school (online of course), so we could provide the highest level of service to our clients.

Mix that in with teaching yourself how to build a website, market your business and work together as husband and wife (and as business partners) for the first time and hey-presto, you’ve got yourself the smoothest road of all!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about SHAWthing Productions – what should we know?
One of our mottos is ‘All it takes is an idea’. At ‘SHAWthing Productions’, we have a 3 step process in how we work, it’s simple – Plan, Execute, Deliver.

At ‘SHAWthing Productions’ we help you take the leap into high-quality video production at an affordable price.

We specialize in Video Production, Photography, Aerial Drone and Editing. Whichever way you want to bring your creative idea to life – with us, it’s always a ‘SHAWthing’.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We’re so glad you asked! It goes without saying really, but family will forever be our cheerleaders and we’re so thankful for their support both here in the United States and also across the pond in the United Kingdom. (Oh we forgot to mention, we’re international!) Myself – Nathan, was born and raised in the UK and my wife Sarah – “Hi” is a true ‘Texas girl’. With that being said, thanks Mum, Mom and our Dad’s.

We’ve been truly blessed in the support of many people but there’s a few individuals we would like to single out and say thank you to. Starting with Richard Olivas (@richtxrealtor) at ‘Remax Signature’ who was kind enough to let us help bring his idea to life with our first Real Estate contract.

We also can’t express our gratitude enough to our close circle of friends that have guided and also helped us out along the way.

First, to Mr. Justin Key (@justinkey101), ‘The Modern Day Renaissance Man’, Actor, Author, Content Creator and Speaker. A man of many talents, you could say and one who certainly has a full schedule 365 days a year, kindly helped mentor us and make sense of things when starting ‘SHAWthing Productions’.

Also, to our friends Venya Pak (@veealwayshere) at ‘Always Here Entertainment’ and T’Keyah Day (@tkeyahday) who’ve helped in all aspects from taking photos of us for our website, tips on the best way to manage a business, finding the best equipment, to simply taking the time out of their busy schedule to check in on us during this current climate and giving us unlimited encouragement.

Last but certainly not least, to our friend Luca Malacrino (@glucamalacrino) at ‘The Chameleon Effect’ Production Company, who helped us find our first client, showed us the power of marketing and really got ‘SHAWthing Productions’ feet off the ground.

Thank you to everyone in our life and thank you to our clients, past, present and future who trust us with their projects.

Ps./ Special Thank You to Sydney Gabel at ‘The Village Cinema’ (@thevillagecinema) for their support and recommendation to ‘VoyageLA’.
