Meet Natalie Ramirez of Bug and Bird Photography in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Ramirez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Natalie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It’s funny how you can go through life never fully recognizing the obvious. I always loved photography, I just didn’t know it. Rather, I didn’t realize it was something I could do for a living. When my son was born my love of photography suddenly came front and center when I realized that I didn’t just want to take dark, grainy snaps of him. I started to teach myself how to use a camera properly. That was 6 years ago. Since then I have discovered that I don’t really enjoy taking pictures of young children. I love pictures that show beauty. I also recognize that women tend to undervalue themselves. We are so good at putting ourselves down, finding all the flaws but never lifting ourselves up. I like a good picture of myself and I think most women do too but don’t know how to achieve that. So I’ve spent the last two years studying women’s portraiture. I know how to show everyone her true beauty.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I come from a family of artists but never considered myself to be one. I was crafty or theatrical but an artist, no way. I realize now, that self-doubt and lack of confidence is what held me back. It is so easy to fall into a trap of “I’m not good enough”. It took time for me to begin to say I am a photographer. That self-doubt is also what drives me. I don’t want to be afraid and I certainly don’t want to hold myself back. So I don’t. I tell myself often that I am good enough. This lesson in self-love is ultimately what makes me a perfect fit for women’s portraiture. I know how uncomfortable it can be when you don’t know how awesome you are. I hope to show women how beautiful and amazing they are.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bug and Bird Photography – what should we know?
I specialize in women’s portraits. I want every woman who walks through my studio and has a beauty session with me to leave knowing they are wonderful. Each session includes hair and makeup, styling and posing to show you at your best. A few weeks after the session we get together for the big reveal. You will be shown gorgeous photos that will be treasured for a lifetime. Some women like to come in on their own but more often than not they come with a loved one, friend, or children. I like to imagine years from now children and grandchildren looking back on photos of their loved ones and smiling.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
This has been a solo journey for so long but my husband has supported me every step of the way. Building this business takes time from my family and often leaves him doing more than his share. It’s the best feeling in the world to know your partner has your back.
