Meet Narine Gazantchian and Marcella Haro of MilaVida Interiors in Glendale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Narine Gazantchian and Marcella Haro.

Narine and Marcella, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We met at work (giant retailer H&M) as managers and we instantly bonded over beautiful things and design. People were always visiting our homes and freaking out over the interiors and we would both be taken aback by that. Like, “Yeah, of course, this looks like this! Doesn’t your apartment look like this?” Maybe that’s part of the whole thing: realizing that not everyone decorates their home the way we did. We like to feel good at home. We work so hard, right? When we come home, we want to be welcomed by beauty. And beauty doesn’t necessarily mean expensive. We were/are “working girls” and we are all about “high/low.” We’ll go to Target and Home Goods for sure. But will we also buy an important piece of furniture, an investment piece? Of course! We were kind of raised by Domino magazine and still feel that’s very modern. This is real life and real life has sentimental kitsch-y things and aspirational “hell yes I worked hard for this” things. That’s very much our aesthetic. There has to be humor and sophistication at the same time.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. We aren’t millennials that were told we could be whatever we wanted to be (no offense to millennials), we were born before that. We were both raised as children of immigrants and it was more important to get a stable job and the artistic stuff wasn’t taken seriously so perhaps that mindset has been the biggest hurdle to get over. Networking and putting ourselves out there has been a challenge. Are we really designers? Going through the process of getting the business license, getting the legal stuff going, business cards, the website… that made it more real.

Please tell us about MilaVida Interiors.
We are a boutique decorating/interior design company and we are HUNGRY! Have a baby? We’ll hook the baby up! Have a whole house, a hotel, a restaurant? We can tackle that too. We recently completed a house for a financier and his wife and that was a dream job. The house had great bones and they both have exquisite taste. Did we have to navigate husband and wife stuff? Sure. But that’s part of the fun too. Knowing that the homeowners had their say and we listened and it came out fabulously? It’s great! We created something together and they’re really happy. Happy people mean REFERRALS!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Not paying bills. Putum dun!
