Meet Nancy Schier of Painted Monkeys & Company in Santa Clarita

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Schier.

Nancy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a freelance designer and artist for over 27 years now. I use to work in fashion, stationary, Feature Animation and video games. I loved being able to make my own hours and work from home, in the park or a coffee shop. After having our kids I felt such guilt whenever I had a freelance job, I had to figure out how can I still work and be with my kids? But it had to be creative and artistic. I felt completely lost without finding a way to express myself.

One day my girl’s school asked if I knew how to face paint because they couldn’t pay for a face painter. I’m a painter so how hard could painting on faces be? I volunteered, and that was the beginning of Painted Monkeys. The crazy fun invites & favors I’d design for my daughter and son’s birthdays became an avenue for income. I started bringing in singing talents to play princesses, pirates, and fairies.

Eventually offered a summer camp teaching Mindfulness, Etiquette, and Empowerment using costumed characters. I use my design experience to make unique invites, portraits, favor or personalized t-shirts. I knew I found my passion and I was making children happy. For the 1st time, I could see the impact of my work, I wasn’t just a ghost artist for some corporation and best of all, it was something our kids could participate. They always give me input and ideas.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been so smooth. I love my team and what we have become. I wanted to give back to our communities. Then, I struggled with health. Three years ago, I discovered I had kidney cancer it made. It is very difficult to function. In 2018 after recovering from the previous surgery, I was again shocked to find out all my illness had been related to a rare form of blood cancer called PV disease. So now what? Will I get to see my kids grow up, get married and have their own kids? Was I going to get to grow old with my loving husband?

I decided I will not be defeated, let this be depressing. Instead, how can I GROW from the challenge? I began learning all I could about nutrition, sound and light therapy, CBT, NLP, and other holistic methods. My organs are now functioning from 30 % to 80-100%. Although at times I can’t use my drawing hand, I’ve started painting digital spirit animal cards. Creating Artwork to inspire people to find the strength within themselves. I use my challenges to teach others and lift peoples hopes. I hope to turn Painted Monkeys to nonprofit, bring our characters to bring joy to sick children.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Painted Monkeys & Company – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I feel imagination so important! We use the opportunity to make it fun to teach. Our princesses and fairies teach about persistence, following your dreams, table etiquette and mindfulness. We don’t just facepaint! But it’s not just little ones, I’ve started a teen program to help girls be confident, find their passions, take back their power, or to self-love not to look elsewhere by teaming up with local Emotional Intelligence experts, therapists, and a self-defense instructor.

I also create events for families to enjoy by teaming up with our local businesses like BigBox Play to get kids “unplugged.” Our teams’ talents make me so proud, and their passion for the kids is authentic. Some of the girls make their own costumes, and they are amazing! Many are theater talents so when you hear them sing they are phenomenal! We do our best to create parties that are filled with giggles, dancing, and games. I continue to design and by the end of the year my spirit animal cards to be done.

The fact that I worked for Disney Feature Animation and Disney Interactive, I really give attention to details which sets us apart. I understand character development. I’ve even designed for Disney’s Descendants doll series. We sincerely care to make a difference or a special occasion special. Using my design background to create invites, party decor, favors or backdrops I can say we are a one-stop shop.

I always loved working with children, so our character parties or making our princess camp is a unique adventure filling my heart with joy. How blissful is it to be told you’re a dream maker!?! Can’t beat that!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is having a community and a team that supports you. Seeing our talent sing and the kiddos light up, smiling, dancing and singing along, it’s heavenly. I know we’ve made someone’s day special. I hope to create a non-profit to bring this joy to everyone or more community events.

Also to start a program that would have a greater impact on our kids to teach them life hacks. I want to relieve kids from stress, anxiety or depression through short animated clips teaching tools like Tapping, NLP and much more in a creative way that may be shown at schools. I wish to share this tools to all our children. They are our future!
