Meet Nakoa DeCoite of Pashey Bella in Toluca Lake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nakoa DeCoite.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My wife started the business when she was 12. We got married six years ago, and that’s when I started to help her with finances and marketing.

I was a professional big wave surfer, so I used everything I learned about working with brands to help build Pashey Bella’s brand awareness. We’re still a very small company but it has grown a lot over the years, and we’re happy to be expanding in LA.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think you’re doing business right if it’s a smooth road haha. It was a lot of trial and error when it came to finding our customers. We didn’t know who was buying or why they were buying. Technology has helped out a lot by giving us analytics.

Please tell us about Pashey Bella.
My official title is co-owner, but I specialize in marketing. I never went to school for it, but I studied sports phycology for years which helped me understand how we think and react to situations as humans.

I feel like being an athlete has helped me with my approach to business. You know that you have to pay attention to the little details day in and day out and one day you wake up and realize that you have made a lot of progress.

As a company, I’m very proud of Pashey Bella’s commitment to producing quality and ethical pieces and that we are able to donate 5% of all of our online sales to help clean and protect our ocean. I don’t know of any other companies run by people who spent most of their lives in the ocean and now get to give back to it.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think I would have tried to outsource more. My wife and I thought we could do everything ourselves, and we did but, I think we could have grown faster if we would have let others help us with things we weren’t good at.

  • Free shipping on orders over $50
  • 5% of all online sales are donated to Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii
