Meet Mya Newsom

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mya Newsom.

Hi Mya, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Because I grew up in a household where creating financial stability was taught and valued, I was determined to have established good credit by the time I turned 18. Shortly after high school graduation, I, unfortunately, found myself out of work as a new mother. While this caused long-term unemployment and little to no income, I prided myself on having a solid 801 credit score. I decided to use my ability to create a financially solid foundation as my niche to help others do the same. This genuine passion to establish and improve one’s economic standing motivated me to mentor members of my community to do the same. This was the start of my entrepreneurship.

Today, I am a mother, a mentor, a business coach, and a financial consultant. Reaching this level of my current platform took hard work and determination, along with the faith that I would be able to improve the lives of others by strengthening financial literacy. I never allowed my past struggles to stand in the way of my brand promotion, and in fact, I allowed it to be the push that I needed to demonstrate my readiness to show expertise in this area.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The past year has definitely been a huge challenge, especially as a very young woman in this industry. For example, most clients believe that age trumps all and that a young financial consultant could not possibly be wise or skilled enough to be able to assist others in this line of work. To overcome this, I usually respond, “Is an older consultant who charges double my fees, but is not on top of the marketing trends necessarily better?” From there, I explain how my level of skill in this area coupled with timely and professional customer service are unique and on par— and even rival— older or advanced consultants. This is because I genuinely truly love what I do and I ensure that my sentiment comes when I interact with my clients.

The past year has also been difficult as I struggled to balance full-time employment and focusing on the launch and promotion of my business, which included creating a social media presence and developing effective time management strategies. Promotion and marketing can become quite expensive, especially when you’re new in business. I needed to quickly learn marketing fundamentals and how to create fresh new content on social media sites like Facebook and Instagram. Because I heavily relied on social media, finding my target audience was critical. This required me to think outside of the box to find exciting ways for customers to learn about my services and to engage with my audience. In order to grow my business and to improve my time management, I partnered with another financial consultant. Together, we take pride in knowing that we offer exceptional customer service and exceed business expectations for all of our clients.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I always knew I was going to be a boss from a very young age. I envisioned myself as a high-level manager, a high-ranking businesswoman, or an entrepreneur. People have always described me as very assertive and determined, which I feel has contributed greatly to my success. My competitive nature has aided in my “boss” background, while it brings out my fun and creative spark—two elements that are vital to successful entrepreneurs. To this day, I still love documentaries and problem-solving shows. They are simply my absolute favorite.
