Today we’d like to introduce you to Ms. Monaay.
Ms. Monaay, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, my godmother would say that I was really smart, observant, quiet, kind of attentive, curious, well behaved and cooperative. In addition to her truths (LOL), I would add that I was creative, social, and fun. I had a lot of friends and we liked to play outside. I also enjoyed playing with my older cousins and doing word searches with my mom. Now I love spending time with my son, brother and sister, decorating events, wine tasting, and painting ceramics.
With being social, years ago, I bartended as a side job. I gave up bartending to go back to college, but I would still mix at private events. Over the years, we would have small events at my mom’s house where I would make different flavored shots. After becoming “kinda buzzed” from them, I started marketing my Jell-O shots into private events for an extra fee. That’s when I started seeing that they were becoming a nice addition to the events. People who felt they were light drinkers would opt for a Jell-O shot instead of a drink and become more buzzed.
After all the positive feedback, I started buying different gelatins and liquor to see what I could do differently. Once I mastered the flavors, I spent time enhancing the looks, names, and presentation. This included figuring out what shape cups the shots would be in if the shots would even be in a cup, should the cups have a lid or no lid, and what garnishments would be used. OMG, so many things to figure out. Last year, just before Thanksgiving, I started wondering, “What if the shots were not in a cup at all? Hmm…” This is when the pies and cookie shots came into place. These became some of the best ideas ever! Now I can make shots based around holidays, themes, and even colors.
Has it been a smooth road?
The business has its challenges like anything else. One challenge is making the non-alcoholic items taste as if they have alcohol. Another challenge is marketing. Although I utilize social media, the pictures show an amazing product, but they do not hit the other sense like taste, smell or touch.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Kinda Buzzed – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am known for my Sweet Potato Pie, Lemon Pie, Starburst and Oreo Cookie Jell-O shots. On the other hand, in addition to the taste, clients have really enjoyed the look of the shots in the martini or margarita cups. They feel that the different cups have been a great addition their themes and to the overall presentation of their events.
So many people speak daily on what they would do or want to do but never actually do it. When I mentioned selling Jell-O shots to friends and family, not everyone believed I would sale anything. They talked negative about my idea, chuckled, or even tried to discourage me. Thanks to the negative criticism, I am most proud that I took the leap and went for it.
What sets me apart is my ability to adapt and be creative for my clients. If you can think of a flavor, I bet I can do it!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The least things I like about our city is the cost of living and crowdedness. I also do not like the bad stigmatisms on the city itself. Although there is some bad, there is a LOT of good in Los Angeles and its surrounding areas. On the other hand, the best thing I like about our city is the diversity of people and cultures.
