Today we’d like to introduce you to Moses Okoro.
Moses, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in Nigeria as a kid, I developed a passion for physical activities and sports. I enjoyed climbing trees, swinging on monkey bars, running, and playing soccer. Staying healthy and fit was kind of a survival tool as we would have to walk long miles to get to school, lift heavy baskets of water to carry back to the village, and perform physical activities when disciplined. I never complained – I didn’t realize it then that I was in my element and being prepared for my purpose.
At 11 years old, I moved to the United States and education became the top priority in my household causing me to no longer partake in sports and physical activities. My parents didn’t find either to be productive. This resulted in only doing school work and no extracurricular activities. As the oldest child, studying and looking after my younger siblings as my parents worked multiple jobs became my sole responsibility.
No longer being physical while eating fast foods and Nigerian cuisine, I gained a ton of weight becoming obese for my age and size. It was my sophomore year when I decided enough was enough – I forged my parents’ signature and joined the school’s tennis and soccer team. I changed my lifestyle and started cooking healthy meals for myself at home. I lost weight and became toned and fit. I had rediscovered my passion for sports and working out and I didn’t plan to ever look back.
After graduating from college, I worked for the NYC Health Department and would train clients before and after work while still maintaining my own healthy lifestyle. After building up much courage and confidence, I left my job and took a leap of faith to do what I loved full-time. I started my business as a full-time fitness coach in NYC.
Shortly after starting my career as a personal trainer, I began boxing at the age of 26 years old. For most, this was too old of an age to start this sport however with hard work and the support of my coach, I was competing at a high level in the amateur fights within less than a year. I won the NY Golden Gloves, competed in the Olympic Qualifiers, and won many more tournaments. I defied the odds with the belief that it is never too late to learn something new.
A few years later, I moved to Los Angeles, CA to continue the marathon to help transform lives through fitness and mental coaching.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing worth fighting for is easy and this was proven after I left a stable career to become an entrepreneur. It was a rough transition that I was completely unprepared for. Luckily I met my mentor Claiborne Smith who believed in me when others doubted me. He took me under his wing and taught me to believe in myself and how to keep long-term clients. Together we opened a fitness studio The Result Fitness in Brooklyn, NY. In the beginning, we were making only enough money to cover the rent of the studio, but with patience and perseverance that changed. Our clientele increased drastically and we were running a successful business in Brooklyn, NY.
Last year, I transitioned to Los Angeles, CA. Starting over in unfamiliar territory is tough but it’s been worth it. I started working at Box n Burn where I learned the fitness world of Los Angeles quickly as it is massively different than NYC. 6 months later, I am now training clients independently as MotivationbyMoses.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about MotivationbyMoses – what should we know?
I am a fitness and mental coach who specializes in boxing training, bodyweight exercises, and fat loss transformations by helping clients to first change their mindsets to prepare for their lifestyle change. In 2016, I launched MotivationbyMoses which is committed to changing lives through health and fitness. I give my clients nutritional guidelines and structured training protocols. I build strong relationships with all my clients and become their accountability partners to push them to their goals.
As a fitness coach for ten years, my proudest moment is knowing that I have transformed over 300 lives. It is my purpose to help change lives.
If you had to start over, what would you have done differently?
As I reflect on my journey, I would not have done anything differently. I am grateful for every blessing and every lesson which has made me the man that I am today. Through trial and error, I am confident enough to say that I am one of the best fitness coaches in Los Angeles.
