Meet Moon Wang of Yuezhu Wang in Santa Clarita

Today we’d like to introduce you to Moon Wang.

Moon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was a student studying architecture at a university in China. I didn’t like this major at the time. After thinking and talking about it with my parents for a long time, I decided to come to America to study animation. At that time, many of my friends didn’t understand me, because in China, architecture is a mature industry. In this field, you can get a nice job with a high salary, while animation is completely different. The salary is low and this industry is still developing. However, I like drawing so much. Fortunately, my parents are also very supportive, so last year, I took a 13-hour flight and came to study animation at CalArts in California.

Has it been a smooth road?
My road to come to America to study animation was not very smooth. At that time, I was under a lot of pressure, both from my elders and my friends. They said that this is a very risky and stupid decision. Why did I give up a stable job and the familiar living environment? After thinking for a long time, I made up my mind. I just feel that people’s lives are so short, why not take the chance to do what I really want to do. If I didn’t come to America, I might regret it later, but if I failed after coming to America, at least I would not regret it. The cost of studying and living in America is very high. In order to prepare to go abroad, I borrowed money from my parents and spent more than two years studying English and preparing my works. After I came to the United States, I did not feel relaxed. I found that my ability kept me far from my dream job. The completely different culture and living environment always made me feel anxious. With the impact of the current virus thing, I ask myself repeatedly: can I really do what I want in the future? I can’t give the answer right now, but every improvement in my drawing ability has brought me closer to my dream job, which is my daily motivation.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am currently studying experimental animation at CalArts in California, and at the same time I signed a contract with the Internet TV platform “New Tv Kids” under China’s Future Television Limited(NewTV) to update a 1-2 minute children’s animation program every week. The program name is: Moon’s Childhood. After signing with this TV platform, I have more freedom to write the stories and draw the characters, which are mainly related to my childhood memories.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Now I study and live in Santa Clarita and go to LA downtown sometimes. Compared with the city I have lived in, Shanghai, this city feels much closer to the nature. I like the beaches and free living atmosphere here, but I am also disturbed by the shootings and natural disasters here.
