Meet Monrovia Photographer: Hosie Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hosie Thomas.

Hosie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I really enjoyed viewing my family photo albums as a youth, but that was only a light spark. As I got older, I became interested in photography and after many years passed my passion grew. I took classes and attended boot camps only to further my knowledge and experience. Soon, I was being asked to shoot events and portraits and after becoming comfortable in that role, my business started and my passion increased.

Has it been a smooth road?
Not a smooth road. People took advantage of my generosity and I was tempted to shoot only on a casual basis. Also, when I thought I was ready to grab the bull by the horns, my referrals stopped and my confidence disappeared. I’ve had to learn to manage the ups and downs.

Have you ever felt like giving up?
There have been times when I haven’t received the number of referrals I expected, times with no call backs after business conversations went well (to me at least) and times when clients have just disappeared. I’ve considered quitting and only shooting personal, non-shared, self-fulfilling projects, but I have been convinced by friends and branding experts that I’ve been given my God-given gift to share with others and I can’t quit. Those talks have inspired me to continue and as a result, there always seems to be a project on the horizon.

Let’s change gears – is there any advice you’d like to give?
Be friendly and reach out to others in the field. Another photographer may indeed be your biggest competition and your biggest resource for business at the same time. Also, never stop shooting and continue to get better by expanding your scope and thinking outside of the box. LA is a big place and there’s always someone looking for someone good at their craft or profession; believe in yourself that the “someone” could be you.

Is there something you are particularly excited about or working towards?
I look forward to the increased opportunities from the relationships I’ve built thus far and to building even more relationships in the future.
