Meet Terry Guy of Monorex in Harvard Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terry Guy.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Terry. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Monorex started in the UK, London just over 15yrs ago as a small artist collective – After a few years of hanging out and working out ways of showcasing our work, we created a live art event called Secret Walls. Essentially this was a 90-minute live illustration battle on huge white walls, held in front of the crowd of 500+ people. This show grew quickly and soon started touring Europe and then the World. Over the last ten yrs, we have battled in 100 cities/45 countries.

We are now based in LA and opened up a creative venue called Start Los Angeles, this offers a gallery, retail pop up space, in house coffee shop, mural yard, and event spaces all under one roof. Secret Walls & its mother company Monorex are both based here, and we also host events here for ourselves and our clients like Nike, Adidas, MLS, etc.

Our mission has always been about building platforms for artists of all backgrounds – giving them a chance to showcase their talents and commission them with real paid projects. We commission over 1000 artists a year globally, and this continues to scale as we grow as a company.

We have other new platforms/projects and ideas in the works for 2019/20 that will expand the Monorex universe even further. Watch this space

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting a small business is never an easy task, especially when the industry we focus on is a niche arts subculture. But we stuck at it, worked a few PT jobs while we laid the foundations and reaped the rewards for our hard work come year three & four.. That was the turning point when brands like Nike, Google etc started to reach out and ask us to collaborate for real money.

Fast forward 15yrs, we are now fully established and contributing towards growing the urban arts industry – making it a realistic career option for as many young artists as possible.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Monorex – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Underneath the original company Monorex, we started a few sub-brands to operate the different creative platforms we run. Secret Walls runs the live art events, High Rise Murals paints large OOH adverts, Start Los Angeles is the new physical studio and School Walls is our new education workshop.

We are known for live art on a large scale and our deep knowledge of curation within the street art/illustration world. Brands and artists enjoy working with us because we have been around for over 15yrs and know what we are talking about.

Our company continues to grow and lead the market because we work with pride, passion, and professionalism.

Do you feel like our city is a good place for businesses like yours? If someone was just starting out, would you recommend them starting out here? If not, what can our city do to improve?
LA is the perfect place for us because it supports creativity. We have been here just four years, and we continue to be pleasantly surprised by what this beautiful city has to offer.

Artists from all over the world visit our studios on a weekly basis, and we always recommend they move here if possible as it really is a place where dreams can be realized.
