Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique James.
Monique, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I got my passion for cooking from Babe (My Dad), he instilled a love for cooking in me from a young age. I would always watch him in the kitchen preparing meals for my family. When I got older, I began watching cooking shows and I would replicate those recipes for my family. I would get excited around the holidays because I knew I would be the one responsible for cooking for my family and friends. The happiness I would get from seeing my friends and family excitement from eating a meal I prepared gave me so much joy.
Within the past few years, I decided to explore the idea of turning my cooking into a business. I have a love for tacos, so I entertained the idea of starting a taco truck. Living in LA, there are so many good taco trucks to choose from, so I knew I had to stand out. I came up with the idea of making fresh flavored tortillas from scratch. I developed three flavors of tortillas (keto option also) that I began selling to my family and friends, and they were a success. After doing the research, I decided that financially it would be best to wait on the food truck. I begin to think that maybe cooking was just supposed to be my hobby since the food truck idea did not pan out for me. Shortly thereafter, my mom got sick. The doctor stated that my mom suffered from high blood pressure and gave her a prescription that she would have to take daily to control her blood pressure. In my mind, her daily food intake is the prescription that needed to be changed. So, I did the research of foods that is needed in a diet to control high blood pressure without a prescription. I put a meal prep plan together for my mom which included food(s) and herbs.
One day I was on the phone with my mother in law giving her an update on my mom’s status when she said, “You should meal prep for seniors. You know they aren’t getting the nutrients they need”, and instantly I got excited. Now people often wanted me to meal prep for them and I would always turn them down but prepping for seniors was different. The idea of helping seniors the way I helped my mom with her diet was filling to me. So, I started “MoBetta Foods”. MoBetta Foods provides meal(s) for seniors. We cater these meals based on specific medical conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. We take out the bad ingredients from your favorite foods and pour in all the nutrients and flavor. At MoBetta Foods, we believe that food is the medicine that we take daily, so we pride ourselves on flavor and fresh ingredients. My target audience upon opening was seniors since then I have expanded to any and everyone who wants to improve their eating habits with food that is not only good for you but also tastes good to you. MoBetta Foods wants to turn whatever your diet (Keto, Paleo, etc.) into your lifestyle. I want to see that same excitement I saw when I was a kid, from my friends and family, now. When people take a bite of my food, I want them to say, dang “she put her foot in that”.
“When Fresh meets better, it’s MoBetta.”
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This journey has not been an easy for me. One of my biggest challenges is knowing what I want to do but not knowing how to make it happen. Being the first in my family to becoming an entrepreneur is a challenge. There is no blueprint for becoming an entrepreneur. Everyone’s journey is different. I have had to figure things out on my own while working 12-hour days, five days a week. So much goes into entrepreneurship. Creating a business, a brand, contracts, promoting and mostly its believing in yourself, your vision and trusting that you are making the right decisions. My Faith is what keeps me going on. I know it will lead me to where I need to be. Everything is a lesson learned.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up my interest were School, Basketball and Cooking. Though I am the “Baby” of my family, I am also the source of strength. I took on the role of making sure my siblings did what they were supposed to do while my parents worked. I got my source of happiness from seeing others happy. That is still my goal, seeing others happiness.
