Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Jackson-Fitzgerald.
Monique, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2014, my husband and I had begun incorporating medical cannabis into our lifestyle and found that not only did we feel better physically but also mentally. It became clear that California was headed towards legalizing recreational cannabis and we wanted to be a part of it. We took an epic trip to the high desert where we indulged our love of oddities and adventure and really kicked off a brainstorming session to see how we could work within and have an impact on the new legal cannabis industry.
We started looking for ways to share not just information but also the spirit of adventure, the benefits of plant medicine and a vision of responsible social consumption that would spark conversations and new ideas. The result is InnDica, an online travel platform for cannabis enthusiasts. Our site features cannabis friendly hotels, venues, events, services and more to provide a single place for travelers to share their adventures and experiences while discovering new cannabis friendly destinations and celebrations.
Has it been a smooth road?
This path to InnDica has at times been a roller coaster ride. The cannabis industry is subject to strict regulations that impact even ancillary businesses that want to work with commercial cannabis operators. I had the advantage of being a cannabis consultant and attorney prior to launching this venture, but even I had a hard time keeping up with the constant regulatory changes at both the state and local levels.
Knowing what is subject to licensing and not, tracking changes to regulations, and pivoting in response have been the biggest challenge. We spent months on research, immersion in the industry and designing the user experience.
Our development timeline went from three months then to six, now almost a full year from starting the process we have a live site. We launched our beta version of the website in October and then went through months of testing, feedback and troubleshooting.
From those results, we went through another ground up site redesign and development process that brings us to today. It is really about learning what works and how to make the user experience enjoyable and one that they will return to for all of their cannabis travel needs.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
InnDica is an online travel platform for cannabis enthusiasts providing places to stay, gather, play and explore with cannabis. We feature a curated list of cannabis friendly hotels, inns, resorts, and vacation rentals along with event venues and the soon to be opened cannabis consumption lounges. Our platform also features events, cannabis tours, and shopping.
We are excited to offer cannabis travelers a place to share their travel reviews, insights and trip stories. Through our online magazine, Foolish Talking, we are featuring trips, voices from the cannabis industry, silly stories and more. We plan to be the only 420 trip advisor travelers need by weeding through the options to offer the best in cannabis travel and allowing users to contribute their tips to the community.
We are proud to have an opportunity to help shape the view of the cannabis community and do our part to reduce the stigmas associated with cannabis use as we promote responsible social consumption. Our focus is on mindfulness, not mindlessness, we are taking travelers beyond their buzz by sharing education and inspiration.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel like Los Angeles is really the place to be for any creative venture. We are surrounded by so much amazing talent that any idea or dream can be brought to life. We are in a great place for our niche, cannabis travel, Los Angeles has been the epicenter for so many amazing new cannabis brands and ancillary businesses.
As a travel destination, Southern California cannot be beaten, I think we will become the number 1 cannabis tourism destination in the next year or so. Key to the survival of this part of the cannabis industry though is allowing responsible public social consumption.
With the introduction of licensed consumption lounges in West Hollywood, I predict explosive growth in the event and travel sectors.
