Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Hogan.
Monique, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey began when I was eleven years old. I planned the spectacular double wedding of Barbie and Ken and Christie and G.I. Joe. Barbie and Christie wore white gowns made of lace fabric (no sewing required I just wrapped the lace around them and secured it with ribbon); Ken wore a leisure suit and Joe wore his Army fatigues. After that grand success I started planning parties and weddings for all of my dolls; soon after I planned parties for the kiddos in the neighborhood (their moms just had to provide the cake, I DIY’d everything else).
Fast forward to when I got a “real” job in the banking industry I was called upon to plan holiday parties, team building outings, executive meetings, and company picnics. I soon began to plan parties for coworkers and friends and started a little “side hustle” called Special Occasions by Monique where I’d plan parties, weddings and other social events. In 2002 I stepped out on faith left the bank and started an event production company and I haven’t looked back since.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My business started off fairly easy. I was planning parties left and right, branched out and started a children’s party planning company called Star Party and the clients started rolling in…Until about 2009. Folks stopped planning lavish parties for their kids, corporations started having small luncheons and stopped having company picnics and holiday parties and brides turned to the internet to plan their weddings.
Currently, my obstacle is social media. I tend to be a private person and I don’t always think to snap and post my events, I’ve got to get used to doing that because almost everyone uses social media and I have to remember that’s another way people learn about me and my business.

We are a boutique firm that provides full service event production in weddings and special events. We pride ourselves on being creative, detailed, unique and fearless. We specialize in the planning and coordination of weddings for the “grown and sexy” brides (usually brides 45+) and Encore Brides.
What’s an Encore Bride? Glad you asked, it’s a bride who’s walking down the aisle for a second (in some cases third) time.
Our mission is to assist our clients with interpreting their vision and turning it into memories that will last a lifetime. Whether it’s an intimate affair for two or an extravagant gala for hundreds we avoid the cookie-cutter approach, but most importantly we go above and beyond. It may sound cliché, but it’s true. Heck, at my last wedding I was mopping the floor at the reception venue.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I were to start all over again I would not have let the “slow times” stop me I would have pushed through, marketed a little harder to grow my business even more and most importantly SNAP n POST.
