Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Hale.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Monique. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started doing hair in 2003. At the time, I was working two jobs. I had zero money to pay for cosmetology school, but I had always wanted to do hair. I told my hairdresser about my goal, and she recommended that I get an apprenticeship. She gave me the paperwork, I filled it out right away and showed up the very next day to start. I think I surprised her with how eager and determined I was. I worked a bakery job early in the morning, went directly to my hair apprenticeship and then finished the day waitressing. It was not easy, but I knew what I wanted to do, and I was making it happen.
To finish my apprenticeship, I needed to complete 3200 hours in the salon. It took me three years. After that, I worked hard to establish myself as an assistant. From there, I began to build my own clientele.
Has it been a smooth road?
You know, there are always struggles. I don’t expect a smooth road; that’s all part of building an empire. One of the biggest challenges in my industry today is the pressure from social media. There are so many amazing hairstylists out there. Social media showcases their work and puts it out there for all to see. It sets a very high standard. As a result, I am always pushing myself to do better. I’m always striving for perfection. Sometimes it can feel daunting.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Monique Hale Hair is the name of my salon. Since I also specialize in hair extensions, I started an additional off-shoot of my businesses called Extension Bar L.A.
What sets me apart, is that I am constantly striving to deliver the best quality, but at the same time preserving the integrity and health of the client’s hair.
I am most proud of all the hard work I have put in. I can honestly say that where I am today being a result of my own determination. I’m proud of my success, but simultaneously, I know there is so much more I want to achieve professionally.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think L.A. sets the bar for hair, so for that reason, yes, it is an excellent place for someone to start out in the business. One-hundred and ten percent.
