Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Gardner.
Monique, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, I started shooting and editing a few years ago on a whim. I was playing around with an app on my phone, then I decided that wasn’t enough once I got over just splicing things together. I wanted to dive deeper into editing so I got Premiere Pro and After Effects and taught myself how to use those.
After that, I purchased a camera because my phone wasn’t enough once I started using AE and PR. Now I’m here and I can’t stop.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been some bumps in the road since I’m self-taught and they’re so many different aspects of shooting and editing. Since I shoot and edit solo it can be a bit overwhelming at times depending on the project. Usually there’s a whole team of people for each layer like lighting, sound design, color correcting, vfx, etc but it’s just me. Which I wouldn’t trade for the world because I love knowing all the ins and outs; plus each new struggle is an opportunity to learn. The more I learn the more obsessed I become, lol.
Tell us more about your work.
I specialize in conveying feeling(s) visually. I’m also really into surrealism so I’m a big fan of visual effects. Which is something I also specialize in.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m looking forward to perfecting my craft, getting a studio and finally rolling out some personal long term projects I’ve been working on.
