Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Robbins.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Monica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Born & raised in the Bronx, I witness the lack of bold, eccentric, and abstract jewelry used to accessorize the everyday attire of Black women. Realizing there was more to accessorizing than a simple gold hoop or stud, I decided to create my own jewelry line named Robbins Nest, NY. I created a line of earrings, necklaces & rings, coming in all shapes, colors & sizes, as a direct representation of the everyday Black woman. I moved to California when I was 20 years old alone graduated & starting working for big-name companies. Once I started working for these companies, I decided I wanted to work for myself.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, I have been struggling since I started I don’t have a car in California so it’s hard for me to get around. I am also financially unstable but I am not letting that stop me from making jewels because that’s probably one of the only things that bring me peace & joy. the jewelry business is also not diverse so a lot of times I am the only black person around and you can feel when things are not genuine.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I make jewelry and I specialize in helping women feeling more confident in jewels they don’t think or will not try cause “the color doesn’t match their skin color” or “it’s too much” etc. I am known for the positivity & support I bring to the table. I am proud of my brand, I’m about to make a year in July & I am already doing better then I can imagine. The main thing that sets me apart is that I am from NYC & the original content I produce. I am also creative in many different many I create my own logo, website, color schedule & more.
What were you like growing up?
I was full of life & very vocal. I always had a huge personality. I was raised in the Bronx so we are a melting pot full of different rhythms but the same blues. I am also 5″11 / I always been the tall girl so the view was different up here lol.
