Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Gordon.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Monica. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started working in the fashion industry in my early 20’s. I went to FIDM in Los Angeles and graduated with a degree in Product Development. Starting out I had worked in the wedding industry as a sales assistant and then worked as a Brand Ambassador for Spanx when the company was new. I moved to working for companies like BCBG and Forever 21 as a technical designer before landing a job as a sales manager for Chantal Accessories.
About a year and a half in, the owner wanted to sell her company and I thought it was the perfect opportunity to spread my wings as business owner. It was 2008 and I was 28 year old. I took on the task of growing the showroom and taking it in a new direction representing different brands. This year in 2018 will be my 10th year in business. We are located in the fashion district in DTLA and love the inspiration and atmosphere that this area holds.
Today, I represent 9 brands from around the world. I try to partner with brands that have a voice or bring something different to the table.
Has it been a smooth road?
There are always peaks and valleys when owning and operating a business. After purchasing the business in 2008, the economy took a dive into recession and we had definitely a difficult time weathering that storm. The great thing about time is tomorrow is always a new day. I tried to keep our goals short term, to the point of let’s keep going one more day, one more week, one more month. We are at 10 years now.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Chantal Accessories – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We specialize in strengthening the relationships between our brands and retailers. Not only do we work on sales, but help with design and trend needs. We represent 9 brands:
The Bra Lab
Hand Up Global Goods
INKED by Dani
I am most proud of our authenticity and openness of the company. I like to work with companies that have a voice or are innovating our industry. We like to provide great customer service.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I have a special place in my heart for DTLA. I went to school at FIDM in the early 2000’s. I’ve worked in the city for the last 15 years. I’ve watched the city move and grow. It’s becoming a hub for creativity and now, a place that people are moving into. With the boom of lofts and business has come a ton of construction and traffic. I think a necessary evil to help advance the area.
