Today we’d like to introduce you to Miss Myah Mayes.
Miss Myah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I came into this world a fighter. I was born premature not even weighing a pound. I could fit into the palm of my parent’s hand and was able to wear baby doll clothes. Every time I hear or talk about this story, I still can’t believe it. There were people from different units of Kaiser Permanente wanting to see the “Carter-Mayes miracle baby”. My passion for nursing started at a young age. I came into this world proving everyone wrong. My family always expressed to me how grateful they were for the nurses and doctors in charge of my care. Without them, I would not be here right now. Up until my late teenage years, I had the same doctor and he became like family. I am thankful to say that my experiences at the doctors have always been good and I want to make others feel that way. Especially women of color. Women of color are known to have the most complications, but it seems that some doctors and nurses just push their feelings to the side. I want to contribute to the change of black women receiving health care. I am currently 22 years old attending Chamberlain College of Nursing pursuing my bachelor’s degree in nursing. I have a year and a half left.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Of course, it has not been a smooth road. Unlike most, I have always known that I wanted to be a nurse. However, when I started applying to colleges and didn’t get into San Diego State’s nursing program, I thought the world was over. Luckily, I got into UNLV. Once I got to UNLV, biology was a bit challenging for me and I had to keep taking classes over and over. Eventually, I transferred from there to the school I am at now, Chamberlain. Although my experience has been nonlinear it is my journey. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
“Nothing that you go through is meant to hurt you. It’s meant to strengthen you, to build your character, to build your faith in God, and to help you to rely not on your own strength or intellect”.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Altruistic Essence and MyyMind – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I plan to use my degree in nursing to enrich and give back to my community. Ideally, I would like to become a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and open up my own practice. I will provide services for families that are geared toward children, teenagers, women and men living a holistically healthy life. What that means to me is to not just solving the problem that they came in to see me for, but to figure out a way to optimize their health as efficiently as possible. I want to give back to my community and educate them on what I know.
I created a platform to empower and enlighten women from the inside out by the name of MYYmind on November 1, 2018. MYYmind is a space where I share my personal stories and parts of my journey to hopefully help anyone else going through it. I have opened up this platform for other creatives to share their stories, embody their true authentic selves, educate, bond through sisterhood, and collaborate all while practicing the art of self-love. I am open to working with other writers, graphic designers, photographers, artists and anyone else who would like to share their story. In the near future, I am hoping to start doing meetups once a month. These gatherings will consist of a few people getting together to share whatever it is we are feeling to know what we aren’t alone. Black community is needed.
As my new project, I am working on producing organic, ethical and effective handmade beauty products by the name of Altruistic Beauty. I am tired of the selection of skin and hair care products on the market, so I decided to go for it myself. I have always enjoyed the freedom of making my own DIY face and hair masks. I love to use my creativity to master the texture of my products. I have become so fascinated with researching different herbs, oils and butters that mix well together. Altruistic Essence is still in its beginning stages. My website is not quite ready, but it is coming soon!
All of these endeavors have not been a walk in the park to say the least. I am most proud of never giving up and not giving in to negativity. What sets me apart from others is my passion and drive to keep moving forward. I’m going to always get it done, elegantly and with grace.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Right now, I am just focusing on maintaining all of the things that I have going on right now. I have already gave you guys a little insight on what to look forward to above. I am most excited to thrive and not get in my own way and staying open to great things that come my way.
