Meet Miré Yang of Pleat Studio in Downtown Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miré Yang.

Miré, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am currently a freelance photographer based in Los Angeles. It has been four years now since I’ve started photography on my own and it’s been quite a journey. I am originally from a small island in the Pacific Ocean, called Guam. Living in LA for 15 years now and still exploring, I have developed into a creative being. I attended Otis College of Art & Design for Fashion Design and started my career as a fashion designer in my early 20s. It wasn’t a creative job that I have imagined but became a great foundation for my development in fashion photography.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel like life is always full of challenges. It has been a rocky road for me, finding a career that makes me happy and also can sustain a living in Los Angeles. I had a part-time job for three years until I was able to go a full-time photographer. I didn’t go to school for photography and had to learn everything on my own. Therefore, my first few years of photography were all unpaid collaborations, which led to building a portfolio and connection to people in the industry. It’s a tough industry where since jobs are short-term, nothing feels stable. Also, my personality had to change in order to work with many different kinds of clients in the industry. Had to become more thick skin & heart but also more open-minded and social. For an introvert, it was a transformation I chose in order to become the photographer I am today.

Please tell us about Pleat Studio.
I am currently a full-time freelance photographer. I started my own content creation production agency, called Pleat Studio. I believe a good teamwork can create amazing results. It requires so many people & energy in producing high-quality content. Not many people know the behind story and the effort put into creating a beautiful website or a brand. So, with my agency, I love bringing creatives together and executing projects for those in need of my photography services.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up on an island and was always surrounded by nature, tropical fruits in my front yard, blue-green ocean, and hot sweaty weather. I always have an attraction for beautiful nature and sceneries. I think the reason why I love to shoot a scenic background could be because of this. I love waking up without an alarm in morning sunlight through my windows. Walking out the house to find a banana tree to pick and eat from. It was quite the slow island life I had.
