Today we’d like to introduce you to Zara Alexa.
Zara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far?
My background started out with my love for collecting vintage finds when I was 16. I would go down to Abbott Kinney, which at that time was lined with little shops and I would scour them for hours searching for unique pieces. I took that passion, and with the items I would collect I started my first business when I was 18, designing a collection of jewelry that I sold to boutiques throughout Los Angeles. My passion has always been deeply rooted in various aspects of design, but I soon realized that my true love was for interiors which led me to pursue my career in Interior Design. I started my first Interiors business and designed a collection of pillows and home accessories that I sold to boutiques worldwide. During that time I was photographing my collections, I discovered my passion for photography and spent the next five years as a photographer specializing in conceptual, portrait and landscape photography. In that last year I developed an interest for fiber art, and what started out as making a wall hanging for myself, turned into a business selling large-scale wall hangings. It wasn’t until last July that I designed my first collection of art prints. I had recently moved and was looking for minimal, modern artwork for my home and wasn’t finding the style I was looking for so I started sketching out my own designs and took them to a Graphic Designer who turned my drawings into digital artwork. I then worked with a printing house and had them enlarged to fit the spaces in my home. After friends were asking where I got them, and with their support, I decided to launch my business.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think with any business there are always things you are learning from and areas to improve in. For me, it has been more about figuring out how to take all of the things that I love to do and incorporate them into business’s that I can equally give my time to. I also have two children, 14 and 24, and I live with rare health conditions so it has been a challenge to maintain balance throughout the years, but when you’re filled with passion at your core, you find ways to make things work, even if you have to be patient.
Minimalist Design Company – what should we know?
I designed my prints with the intention of combining minimal and modern design and creating simplicity in linearity, while bringing in a bold, yet calming focal point to a space. Each design has an array of geometric lines & shapes and a contrasting black and white color palette that are versatile and can fit into a multitude of design aesthetics. Design for me is a constant thing, I am always looking at patterns and shapes and finding inspiration in the most unique and unexpected places, allowing myself to be open to whatever may come next.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
