Meet Mimi Masher of Bayshore Rink Party in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mimi Masher.

Mimi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been renting Bayshore Sports Rink for over eight years. I started out by running Long Beach Junior Roller Derby there and it eventually grew to include a weekly roller disco night. I love roller skating and all the things related to it. And I also love the beach so the fact that this rink is located right on the beach is a dream come true. It is a hockey rink but it’s not a sanctioned size so they do not play many hockey games here. The rink sits empty unless somebody rents it out. I have made it my goal to rent it out as much as possible and keep roller skating there as much as I can with all my friends. I have been hosting weekly roller discos since 2015 approximately when I was gifted a Fender PA System. From there, I began collecting as many roller skates as I could to use as rentals. Today, I own over 50 pairs of skates in various sizes and work with DJ’s and live bands to create the most exciting skate environment on the beach.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Has it been a smooth road? Well, I’d say it’s had its pebbles in the road but for the most part it has been all fun and amazing. The only hard parts have been months where we do not get enough attendance and I have to pay for the rink out of my own pocket. That was find when I had steady employment but these days it can be a gamble as I work for myself.

I must say, as of our last event, we were getting upwards of 30-40 skaters and paying off the rink fees, staff and DJ’s. Sometimes since the rink is on the beach, we have to cancel due to weather and we have to cancel at the last minute. I really hate doing that but sometimes Mother Nature leaves me no choice.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I specialize in teaching kids and adults of all abilities how to roller skate. I consider myself a facilitator of fun, planning roller skating discos and beach roll outs for my community. Around my town, I am known for my rollerskating, helping others in need and burrito eating. oh and probably my colorful hair. I also own a roller derby banked track and I am trying to create an indoor roller derby and roller rink. (FB: LB Roller Derby Banked Track)

I am most proud of the hardworking myself and a small group of friends have created in a once unused part of town. So many of the current neighbors tell me they “didn’t even know the rink was there” as they walk past. I am proud of my work with the youth. I love to empower them through teaching them how to help others, run the rink or teach roller skating lessons. Nurturing them through roller skating, giving them the skills to talk to people, assert themselves and learn job skills.

I have a knack with kids. I joke that my youthful demeanor makes the kids like me but I’m actually “old enough to know better” so the parents trust me with their kids. My colorful hair and vibrant personality get kids very interested. I do not have any children of my own and probably never will. But, I really love to be a part of kid’s lives. And there are so many cool kids here!! It gives me plenty of hope for the future. I try to be a positive role model (hehe pun intended) while remaining real and hopefully sharing my real-life experiences.

What were you like growing up?
I was always a little weirdo. A self-conscious, bubbly weirdo. I was never shy, never modest. But, always feared public failure. I grew up hearing impaired which I would later realize shaped everything I am. I couldn’t hear well and combined with being dyslexic, I just didn’t excel in school. Something that always made me doubt myself and feel stupid. I love singing, dancing and children theater. Though I couldn’t sing and have little rhythm. I think it’s getting better now that I have hearing aids!! I loved being on stage and the center of attention. Nothing phased me except math, history and science. I am a lover, a flirt and a hugger. And, now that being weird is cool, life is great!!
