Meet Miller Duvall of The Spirit Guild in The Arts District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miller Duvall.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My family has been farming in California for six generations. As I started to do more work on our Bakersfield farm, I realized that, after my visits, whenever I went to a bar back in Los Angeles, it felt like something was missing. All of the beautiful tastes and smells (and even, metaphorically, sights) of our citrus orchards weren’t being represented. It struck me as strange that there was so very little behind the bar that was both made in California and made from produce grown in California. I wondered what the ultimate California spirit would be like, what it would taste like. Clearly, it would have to be made from citrus. Along with our head distiller, we began a process of experimentation…

Has it been a smooth road?
The permitting process, both on the state and federal level, took much longer than expected. We also did our own fundraising for the distillery which required learning a skill set very different from that of distilling!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Spirit Guild – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We made both Astral Pacific Gin and Vapid Vodka entirely in-house from local clementine juice. We do not outsource any part of the process to anyone else nor we do not filter our products. We make pure and natural spirits from fruit grown about one hundred miles from here. We also have one of the few female head distillers in the industry.

Even our design is local: the stained glass in our tasting room comes from Judson Studios in Highland Park. The bar and door are made from three walnut trees we cut down ourselves (from a neighboring farm). These works of functional art were designed by a local artist named Megan Whitmarsh.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We love the city’s iconoclastic, playful, and creative attitude which seems to embody the current food and beverage environment. People can be really supportive here.

We don’t like the disparities between rich and poor and the fact that many of our neighbors are homeless. Also, we don’t like how the automobile has an outsized place in the social landscape.
