Today we’d like to introduce you to Mileija Winters.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mileija. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Senior prom was approaching and I knew I had to figure something out. No one knew how to do my hair to my liking and that’s something I’m very, very particular about. My hair is my crown. I decided to make my first wig. I debuted it the day of Prom. 30”, bright red, virgin hair made into a wig, by me. I immediately fell in love with my craft and so did others. When people saw my handmade wig, they too wanted a try. I began getting inquired to make wigs for others and there bloomed an idea of taking this “wig-making-thing” to a whole other level. I wanted my wigs to be different. I wanted them to be a “real thing”. After experiencing the satisfaction of my first customer and feeling the rush of what running a business was like, I decided to embark on a new journey. Thus in 2013, Laced By Layy was born. I registered for an LLC, trademarked Laced By Layy, got a logo made, designed my own website and made my services available to the public. Laced by Layy took off! I began pursuing a degree in Information Technology at Morgan State University, which was surprisingly under the school of business. This forced me to also take business classes which magnified my true love of business. I switched my major to Business Administration and promised myself that I would invest everything I had into my company. I refused to get a degree to make someone else rich. From then on, Laced By Layy has been ever-growing, serving over 6000 customers so far!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In the beginning, things weren’t always so easy. The idea of young women wearing wigs was not always so well received. Back in 2013, wigs were a rarity. They were mostly worn in television productions, by celebrities and older women or women experiencing hair loss. The thought of wearing a wig was cringe-worthy to some, as they believed that it’d look super unnatural. Laced By Layy was able to put an end to those myths. My wigs were astonishingly natural looking and that’s what became my trademark. Also, being so young and choosing to become a CEO was a struggle. A lot of my peers laughed and joked about the seriousness of my business. They did not believe that I would stick with the idea of being my own boss. No one believed that a 17-year-old could run a business properly. I had to overcome stigmas and doubts and show everyone that this was not a game.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Laced By Layy began as a custom wig company. We created units for women of all types. Women who wanted to try a new look, those who wanted to protect their hair, those in need of hair replacement due to hair loss and more. In 2015, we expanded and began selling virgin hair extensions and other beauty accessories such as lashes and hair care tools. We specialize in setting trends and making each one of our customers feel uniquely beautiful. What I’m most proud of as the owner of Laced By Layy is that this company was truly built from the ground up.
The driving force behind Laced By Layy was the rapport built with each customer I came into contact with. I made sure that each customer felt special and that their needs were heard. Each unit I created was made with love and I believe that my customers feel that. My customers turned into more than just buyers, they became my friends. They became true supporters of what I do and that only pushed me to work harder and continue to elevate my craft for them. I visited China to source my own products and ensure the best quality and prices for my company. That’s what sets Laced By Layy apart from the others. Many hair company owners don’t actually visit where they are purchasing from but this was an important part of the process for me. I wanted to feel the hair, test the hair and ensure that it was nothing but the best. I price my products with my customers in mind. I want Laced By Layy to be afforded by people of any budget. The quality of hair I sell is sold by many others for triple the price. I coined the phrase “good hair doesn’t have to be expensive hair” in lieu of my luxury quality products priced affordably.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always interested in trying new things. I loved to explore and to learn. I wasn’t afraid to try my hand at anything! I’ve always been a natural leader. I know what I want and I will always come up with a plan to get it. I’m a bit of an introvert, but I quickly learned in business that closed mouths do not get fed! I broke out of my shyness for the sake of my business.
