Today we’d like to introduce you to Miko Branch.
Miko Branch is the co-founder and CEO behind the premium trailblazing and award-winning hair care company, Miss Jessie’s that exclusively caters to the diverse spectrum of all hair types. Miko founded the company with her sister, Titi Branch, and they named it after their beloved and fiercely independent “do-it-for-yourself,” and “tell-it-like-it-is” paternal grandmother – Miss Jessie Mae Branch.
As the visionary behind the Miss Jessie’s brand, Miko revolutionized the hair care industry and became a leading pioneer of the natural hair movement by creating hair care solutions and high-quality hair care products. Miko quickly changed the conversation about hair care by declaring that Miss Jessie’s products were not exclusively for a specific ethnic group but rather were for all types of textures and curls regardless of ethnicity. As a result, Miss Jessie’s product line includes a variety of products for every type of texture from wavy to coily.
Miko’s fingerprint is evident in every aspect of the Miss Jessie’s brand from formulating to the package design and marketing of the award-winning products, including favorites like Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls, Curly Pudding, Honey Curls, Jelly Soft Curls, MultiCultural Curls and Hold Me Down.
Miko continues to develop innovative, original and effective solutions for curly hair needs and she has acquired numerous accolades such as becoming a national bestselling author of her business memoir, Miss Jessie’s: Creating A Successful Business from Scratch -Naturally (Harper Collins). A pioneer in the beauty industry, Miko has been recognized as a leader with Women’s Wear Daily’s Most Influential Women in Business, 2015 honoree of Ebony Power 100. She has also graced the cover of numerous magazines including Hype Hair in 2018 and Black Enterprise Magazine in 2016 as a result of her remarkable tenacity and impressive business acumen.
Although grateful to receive such recognition, Miko prefers to give, particularly to organizations that encourage the advancement and education of minority youth. Miko has partnered with the New York Urban League to create The Titi Branch / Miss Jessie’s Award for Excellence Scholarship and the United Negro College Fund in support of their scholarship programs and has made charitable donations to the Doe Foundation, NAACP, The Studio Museum in Harlem and Morehouse College.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not a smooth road building a business from scratch without any loans, angel investors or special contacts but what my sister Titi Branch and I had was one another as we figured things out as we went.
Little did we know that we would become pioneers and trailblazers in the haircare industry with groundbreaking and innovative products like Curly Pudding and Pillow Soft Curls.
My sister Titi sadly passed away in 2014 and that had to have been the most difficult thing I’d ever experienced in my life both personally and professionally. We were partners in business but we’re best friends, roommates, co-parents to my son and so much more.
Learning to get over the heartbreak while running the business was huge challenge. I prayed everyday and figured things out as my everloving partner was no longer with me.
Good thing we built a very powerful business which created products that people truly love. More importantly, my sister Titi Branch trained me to be good in business and resilient during tough times.
Over time I was able to adapt to my new normal and get back to business. Miss Jessie’s has been very focused on coming out with more hair products that our customers love and we’ve put out 12 amazing ones in the last few years with more to come! We proudly continue to be a market leader.
Please tell us about Miss Jessie’s, LLC.
Miss Jessie’s is known for all things curls, coils and waves.
As co-founders, my sister Titi Branch and myself most proud of creating hair magic for billions of curly hair ringlets. We are known as pioneers in the beauty industry as we created hair products from scratch from our kitchen table to offer solutions to textured hair when there were no options in the early 2000s.
What sets us apart from others is that our products are known to work! Our brand personality stands out from the rest and shows up in so many ways whether it be our fun packing or our original groundbreaking never seen before formulations like Curly Pudding and Pillow Soft Curls. Our unbreakable bond with our customer is strong as Miss Jessie’s was there from the very start.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Not a thing in business but I would have done everything in my power to keep my sister Titi on the planet with us.
