Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikhail Alfon.
Mikhail, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I thought I was going to be a basketball player. My mom never told me that I was going to stop growing in the eighth grade, reaching 5’6″ on a good day. At one point I thought I was going to be a rockstar – I was playing in a band that gigged at some pretty amazing venues like the Roxy, the Whiskey-a-Go-Go, the Galaxy which is now the Observatory. And then I became a nurse.
I was really good at it too. Because of some really unfortunate family circumstances, I had to change trajectories, and I played poker for a living for three years. I was playing poker to help out my mother since my dad went to prison and my brother was in India with my grandparents. I was pretty good at poker, but I never got that big win that made it comfortable.
My poker coach told me that I had to go back to school or get a job. I never liked school, in high school I barely went, to be honest, so I got a job doing phone sales – a glorified term for telemarketing for an online marketing company. It was working at that company that I realized that I wanted to do more for business owners, so I started my first company in 2014.
It was a social media management company – and later in 2017, I left that company and started my current venture, a full-service content development, and digital marketing agency. I guess you could say I’ve tasted a bit of everything.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’m honestly so blessed for my life, but it has not been an easy one at all. I don’t want to go into detail, but I was essentially forced to change careers from nursing to playing poker due to the trouble my dad was getting my family into. I played poker because I couldn’t get a job – I even got rejected from burger king.
It was just my mom and me, we had a family living upstairs, the ceiling was falling apart, and I slept on a futon mattress because my mom thought it was more comfortable than the couch and wanted to give me the better half of the deal.
My first company was also a struggle. I started it with no money and no job and really built the entire thing from the ground up with no experience. Imagine making a website, managing digital platforms for a (really) small business for three months all for $600. That’s how this whole thing started.
I call a bologna sandwich from the 99¢ store the entrepreneurs combo because that’s truly all I could afford when I was starting out. My first company lead to an estranged relationship with an old friend and then business partner. I mean. So no, the road hasn’t been smooth.
Blue Light Media – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Blue Light Media helps companies develop unique content, and we manage it on various digital marketing platforms focusing on social media. So really, everything from concept to content development, to management and measurement. Market research, brand positioning, the whole thing.
I’m most proud of my team. I mean, we are all really great friends, and we truly enjoy working with each other. That’s what makes this whole thing worth it, is being able to create a company where people are happy to work for it.
From a results/work standpoint, I guess you could say it’s helping one of our clients get acquired not once but twice, the second being by a Fortune 500 company. Luckily, they are still our client, too!
What sets us apart is that everyone in this company has experience building a company – as they’ve all been a part of it in one capacity or another. So we apply that same mentality, tenacity, and expertise to not only the campaigns we create but how we manage the process as well. It’s been really helpful to all our clients.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success is just happiness. People think a million dollars is a benchmark for success, but they rarely need the million dollars for what they’re really looking for – a sense of freedom, security, and significance.
I mean with the right perspective and work ethic you can achieve that now and if you are happy with those results – you can be happy, thus successful.
- Our minimum retainer is $2,500 per month which gets you some content development and the best social media management in the industry. Of course, each client is different so it really depends on the scope of work you need.
