Meet Mikel Barandiaran

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikel Barandiaran.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mikel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I arrived to LA a little more than a year ago, with two bags and my guitar. No license, no apartment and no work contacts, it was a strong bet on my intuition but I knew I had to do it. I started as an intern in a studio in North Hollywood after finally moving to an extremely small bachelor’s apartment. Thanks to that studio, I found a few gigs as session musician and scoring for shorts, which gave me a little money to keep going until I finally got a job at Deluxe Entertainment. Working in big projects for Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and MGM. I quit the job in the aspiration to get a more creative and cool project and I landed in Nickelodeon Animation as part of the audio team for the Baby Shark upcoming series. Also, I’m finally releasing my studio album “Sobremesa” on September 25th after releasing four singles this year under my project “Mikel Aitor”.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely a wild road, but also an exciting trip. I do not trust smooth rides, they soar you too easy and let you get used to the comfort, next thing you know you’re half-sleep in some temporary bridge in downtown LA hitching a ride in someone else’s dream, life’s too short to have a good normal and steady course. As I said before, coming here without a place, a car, a license or work connections was quite the struggle. But I was prepared for it, I had everything to win and not so much to lose. Besides this is LA, the city of broken dreams, even failing here has a certain touch of romance in it.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I’m a musician, producer, singer-songwriter, a composer, and an audio engineer. I don’t get paid for most of them, but I love each one of those paths. Currently, I’m working in a Baby shark project series for Nickelodeon and in my personal musical project called Mikel Aitor, my record is out on September 25th and I have a few singles out in Spotify too. I consider that we can expand our own dreamed art into whatever we do, if we share that passion into something we thought it wouldn’t fit for our purposes, it will eventually payout. Maybe I’m being a full cliché idiot, but idiots do not catch colds so I’m fine with it.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Innocent love for the art, honesty and patience. The merit of patience is the learning curve you follow during the path that will eventually determine the experience of the goal. And feeling your art through the innocent perspective is what keeps it honest and constantly new, that’s how you surprise yourself.
