Meet Mike Melançon of Wine Splurge in Santa Fe Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Melançon.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After hosting several wine & food pairing events for my co-workers, I decided to build an online wine store. The name and idea for the logo came quickly, so I formed the corporation in early 2017. However, it took several months to find a location, web host & credit card processor who would allow wine sales. In June 2018, we received our ABC License for the online wine store, so we started to source wine directly from small, CA wineries, as well as small wineries that we found, through relationships with our importers. After several conversations with small wineries and importers, understanding their concerns, we developed our mission to help preserve small wineries and to promote female-run wineries and female winemakers. This might seem a little backward to some folks; we started the company first, and our mission was developed after – some entrepreneurs develop their mission first, then build the company.

We have been selling wine for two years, and we’ve grown at a humble pace. Word of mouth, ads, social media and even a radio and TV interviews, have all helped to fuel that growth – we are grateful for every customer and we try to make it a great experience for them.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle has been getting our name out, so people can see the wines we offer and shop our store. We tried different ways to promote our website, learning what works and what doesn’t. Word of mouth has been our best advertisement; when we treat our customers well, they will tell their friends.

Another struggle for us is cash. Building a retail store takes a considerable amount of working capital – all of our investment is in inventory. Since we don’t have a lot of money to invest, this limits the number of selections we have for each wine varietal. Our goal is to offer more wine varietals from other wine regions, but we would need to grow.

Please tell us about Wine Splurge, Inc.
We source great wine, mostly from small wineries, and we can ship to 44 states. We are known for our level of service, our ability to find great wine, and how we introduce people to new wines.

We are humbled by the appreciation received from folks in the wine industry. It tugs at our hearts when a winery thanks us for impacting them in a positive way.

We are a family of four, trying to run this business, so we’re a small business, trying to help other small businesses. We offer free shipping and great prices, but most of all, we are a phone call or email away from any question you have.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory was the first day I rode my bike without using training wheels. I did great for about 10 seconds; I couldn’t remember how to steer, so I ran into a tree. I got back up and tried again, still a little shaky and I was crying, for sure. My brothers encouraged me and I improved after that; it took a lot of practice, but I eventually got better. Riding a bike gave me freedom that I didn’t have before.
