Meet Dr. Mike Daher of Pax Pharmacy

Hi Dr. Daher, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Michel Albert Daher and I am a second-generation pharmacist. I am the owner and Pharmacist-in-charge of @Pax_Pharmacy I and II in CA. I graduated from Oregon State University/Oregon Health and Sciences University College of Pharmacy in 2013. I completed a 1-year Ambulatory Care Residency at the Old Town Clinic through the Oregon State University College of Pharmacy where I operated and managed my own Pharmacy Managed Diabetes Clinic which encompassed hypertension, hyperlipidemia, immunization therapy, and heart failure. As a pharmacy student, I worked at the Portland VA in the heart failure clinic for two years, and during rotation I trained at the prestigious Providence Medical Group in ambulatory care with a diabetes focus. I graduated from the residency in 2014 and moved to Southern California to open Pax Pharmacy.

After the pharmacy opened, I was a part of the inaugural faculty in 2016 for the division of Pharmacy Practice at Marshall B. Ketchum University where I have taught over 200 first year pharmacy students. As a Preceptor, I have educated and trained over 200 students since 2013 many who interned at Pax Pharmacy. In addition, I am currently President-elect and a Board of Directors member for the San Gabriel Valley Pharmacist Association where I oversee outreach and networking events for 350 pharmacists. In 2017, I was the 14th pharmacist in CA to be granted the Advanced Practice Pharmacist license where my patient care focuses on hypertension, hyperlipidemia, influenza, and strep testing. The APh license allows me to work via a CDTM with local physicians. This was a proud moment since I sat on the CPhA subcommittee that helped organize and implement the APh license. Pax Pharmacy specializes in long-term-care where we service many board and care, ICF, and SNF patients in Southern California. Pax Pharmacy’s community impact is prominent as I have a partnership with City of Hope cancer hospital where we provide bedside delivery for hospital discharges.

In 2019 alongside two colleagues, the Middle Eastern Pharmacist Association @mepha_ca was established to create a space for a buying group and networking in all fields of pharmacy for Middle Eastern pharmacists, students, and supporters. My vision is to continue teaching future generations, educate patients on their medication, and grow my community pharmacy. Let’s connect and collaborate.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. Starting Pax Pharmacy was a struggle in the beginning. I started from scratch- I had to build relationships fast with nursing homes, with physicians and with City of Hope hospital knowing the longevity of my business depended on it. Reimbursements were and are still a struggle but we manage. Looking back, I am still amazed how I finished residency and immediately started my own business. My support system has always been a guiding force.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Pax Pharmacy is a community retail pharmacy in Duarte that opened in 2015 with the plan to service walk-in patients and specializing in nursing homes. The team at Pax Pharmacy comes from different backgrounds and collectively have over 20 years of pharmacy experience as pharmacists, technicians, clerks and delivery personnel who speak Spanish, Arabic and Portuguese.
