Meet Miguel Balan of Imagine Photography & Design in San Fernando Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miguel Balan.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Miguel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I became interested in photography when I bought my first camera. A 35 mm film camera. I began taking pictures of nature, family, and landscapes. I took classes at a community college to improve my technique. My professor encouraged me to continue in the field of photography.

Around that time I sought employment with an old acquaintance who owned a photography studio. He hired me as a trial photographer. I assisted him in events where he was the main photographer. Events included weddings, Quinceañeras and family portraits. Observing his style helped me develop my own style of portraiture. Eventually I was sent to events on my own.

I also assisted him in the post production and retouching of images. This led me to be knowledgeable in the application of Adobe Suite. I began designing albums on my own.

After working for a few years in the studio my first child was born. I wanted to be with her more time so I decided to work from home and build my own business.

I like working with people. Family is a big part of my vision as a photographer because taking pictures captures the essence of each family. Being part of others’ special day, like a wedding, makes me feel I am helping them to preserve their memories.

I now include maternity photo sessions, newborn sessions, anniversaries, and graduation parties in my line of work.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. There is a competition every day. I have to prove my work is trustworthy. I have to prove I am experienced.

A challenge I have had is that I need to make myself available to ethnic groups other than my own to expand my business.

Imagine Photography & Design – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a field photographer. I specialize in weddings. I begin with meeting the couple in a way that helps me get to know them so I know what I can offer them. I try to make their experience as intimate as they want it to be. It is important to me for them to be comfortable with me so that during a photo session they are relaxed and willing to cooperate for good results.

I am known for good customer service. I put couples at ease with my relaxed demeanor.

I am proud that as each year passes I am a better photographer that never stops learning new techniques. I like to stay on top of what is new in photography.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career is when past clients have called me to cover multiple family events. I feel they consider me a friend they can rely on to memorialize all their special moments.
