Meet Michelle Valenzuela of MV Music in Redondo Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Valenzuela.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Michelle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started my work as a music teacher long before I became a working musician as a singer-songwriter. It was in my college years of music school where I got my feet wet as an instructor and fell in with the art of developing young musicians. Fast forward ten years later, I was now writing for film and tv, releasing my own music as a singer-songwriter and working as a session singer. I also became a popular teacher at some of the top music schools in the South Bay of LA for my work with young singer-songwriters. I developed a curriculum to teach my students how to compose a great pop song from beginning to end. Most importantly, I wanted my students to be able to write a song without my help by the time we finished a record. When my schedule started exploding, I decided it was time to open my own school. That’s when MV Music Studio was born! MV Music has helped develop countless singer-songwriters including Joker’s Hand, Lily Simone, Jessy Blackman, Bella Ellyse, Alexis Breeze, and Juliette Sussman.

Most of these songwriters have released amazing records, placed music in film & tv or are attending university to pursue music as a career! In addition to teaching songwriting, MV Music also teaches piano, ukulele, guitar, singing, and music theory. One of our most popular services is teaching multi-instrumentalists who wish to accompany themselves singing. We also offer songwriting camps in the summer to young beginners ages 10-14 who are looking to have their first experience recording in a real studio and are just learning to write songs. There is nothing more rewarding than helping someone make their dreams come true!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Balancing my career as a singer-songwriter and running a music school has definitely been a challenge. It’s almost like running two different businesses at once! Clients schedules are constantly shifting. There’s accounting, advertising, renovations and repairs. In spite of these challenges, MV Music is thriving thanks to our client’s referrals. COVID-19 threw a huge curveball our way. We had to switch to online learning overnight and cancel live showcases indefinitely. We’re so lucky to have such a loyal clientele. They’ve adapted to our online learning model with great ease. We even had an online songwriting camp this year, which went off without a hitch!

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
MV Music is a learning studio that specializes in one-on-one music instruction for children and adults of all levels. We are known for our singer-songwriter program, which helps develop students who wish to write their own music and accompany themselves playing piano, guitar or ukulele. We have helped students write songs for records, television, recitals, and even just to blow off steam. At the end of the day, our ultimate goal is for our students to fall in love with music.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I’ve always felt if I could make a living sharing my love for music and songwriting with others, that I would be successful. Like the saying goes, do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life!
