Meet Michelle Nadjar of The Refinery in Sherman Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Nadjar.

Michelle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Fun fact for people who are not in the entertainment business (since I didn’t know this until college!) – there is an entire industry that crafts the marketing of movies and television shows… as in, all those cool trailers you see in the theaters or fun commercials on TV – and that’s what I do 🙂

I started at The Refinery – an entertainment marketing agency – five years ago, fresh out of USC, working as a receptionist. For me, it was the perfect foot-in-the-door opportunity that allowed me to not only get familiar with the industry but also survey all the departments to figure out where I’d ultimately fit best.

I have always loved to write (I went to school for journalism), so the fact that my first step up was writing scripts and concepts for trailers was no surprise. From there, I’ve been working my way up, ultimately landing my dream role of Producer! Now I work directly with clients from major film, broadcast, and streaming studios and help lead our team of editors, writers, and graphic designers throughout marketing campaigns.

Some career highlights that I am particularly proud of: Disney’s The One and Only Ivan, 20th Century’s Ford v Ferrari, FOX’s The Masked Singer, ABC’s For Life, and Amazon Prime’s Carnival Row… along with some great stuff in the works!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I must say, I have been extremely fortunate to have found both a career path and a company that has allowed me to grow at such a rapid rate. I’ve been blessed with some amazing opportunities and worked with so many people I look up to along the way. However, that isn’t to say there haven’t been challenges – especially at the beginning of my climb. I felt I had to constantly remind myself to speak up and that my voice is strong, regardless of whether or not I was the youngest in the room. As I’ve gotten older and more experienced, I’ve become more confident and learned to trust my instinct – it rarely leads me astray 😉

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Refinery – what should we know?
The Refinery is an award-winning advertising agency, specializing in AV, Digital, and Print campaigns for the entertainment industry. I specifically am an AV Producer who works with theatrical, broadcast, and streaming studios. In my position, I am fortunate enough to be hands-on throughout the whole process – from concepting the initial ideas, to working with the editors/graphic designers/music team/writers to craft a piece, to getting it ready for on-air, in theaters, or online.

I am most proud to be at The Refinery because it’s a company that not only allows you to be yourself but truly encourages it! No idea is too big or too small, and we all work together to create the best creative possible.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
“Perseverance, secret of all triumphs,” is a quote I’ve lived by for many years. While I feel there are many qualities that contribute to success, I think consistent determination and persistence has ultimately led me to where I am today. In my job, there have been many late nights and busy days – but I have always kept the bigger picture in mind. I do not quit until I feel I get the job done right, and I think that shows within the work I have produced.
