Meet Michelle Hadley of LotusLabs Consultancy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Hadley.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Michelle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The formal definition of a consultant is “someone who provides expert advice professionally.” But I’ve been a consultant my entire life–even before I became an expert at anything. To me, being a consultant is about bringing a fresh perspective to everything, seeing potential opportunities and connections everywhere, and having an extremely high level of empathy.

While I brought a consultative approach to my entire professional career–from marketing for the government agency division of the third largest risk management firm to deploying email marketing and CRM for the Disneyland Annual Passholder program–my very first formal consulting gig came through my experience at Chapman University where I got my Masters in Business Administration. I worked on a team to do consulting on the launch of a new restaurant concept for a couple closely connected to Chapman’s Board of Counselors. I immediately connected with Lily, the mastermind behind the concept and the recipes. It was that connection, in my opinion, that drove the success of the project. As much as I love the market research and the formal consulting part of the work, I treasure the “people” element of what I do. It adds that extra touch of magic to my projects.

After that project, I knew I wanted to do boutique consulting for startups and small- to mid-sized businesses. I also grew up in a small family business so my heart is in that space.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Entrepreneurship is never a smooth road! I am extremely passionate about the end product. I want that “wow” factor when clients see what I’ve delivered whether it’s a complete rebranding, a new email marketing strategy, or an investor pitch deck. But…I am far less passionate about the sales process. I’m always reticent to sell companies on services they don’t need or that are outside of their budget or goals. For that reason, I rely on word of mouth to build my business because it’s organic and lets companies come to me when they have a need.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about LotusLabs Consultancy – what should we know?
LotusLabs Consultancy is a two-person team. I’m at the helm. Jackie Clark, my lovely social media guru, is my muse and content wizard.

Together, we provide bespoke consulting services for startups and small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs). What that means is that nothing we do is one-size-fits-all (or even most!). I will look at a company’s pain points, goals, and budget, and I will try to come up with a solution that gives them what I call attainable magic. I’m always looking for technology solutions that enable them to operate more like a large company for less money.

One client wrote about my start up consulting: “I also felt like she actually cared about my project…” These words encapsulate what makes me proud of what I do on each and every project. I get very invested in companies and ideas as if they were my own, and I think it shows in the passion and energy I put into my work.

One of my favorite services to offer companies is the Ideation Workshop. I got this idea from a book by Heather LeFevre, Brain Surfing: The Top Marketing Strategy Minds in the World. The concept behind the workshop is to bring some brain power and a formalized creative process to any challenges your company faces or even just if you want to get some fresh, innovative ideas. We assemble a team comprised of subject matter experts external to your company with a variety of backgrounds as well as some internal folks for an all-day brainstorming session, hosted by yours truly.

These sessions are designed to take a company’s team outside of their day-to-day workspace and expose them to new minds and ways of viewing their problems. We guide the team through the process of creative brainstorming because, despite what many people think, there is a process. At the end of the workshop, we compile the ideas, make a recommendation, and develop an implementation plan. I think it’s the most unique service we offer.

Our other services include:

– Market Research
– Branding
– Analytics
– Web Design and SEO
– Social Media Management
– Investor Pitch Decks
– CRM and Marketing Automation
– Email Marketing
– Product Launches and Events
– PR

We work in both the B2B and B2C space, and we love cross-pollination of ideas between the two.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I have to list two characteristics because these two together have gotten me where I am today: resilience and imagination. With these tools, you can overcome any challenge and reinvent the wheel every day. Hopefully, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel that often, but all humans and companies experience challenges and setbacks. It’s the energy and attitude with which you face these challenges that define and sustain you.
