Meet Michele Soulchild

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michele Soulchild.

Michele, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Wow, where do I start!

I’m from a small beach town, Morro Bay, on the Central Coast in Cali. My mom was a dance teacher and a drummer in a rock band so I was basically born into music & dance. We would watch Soul Train every Saturday and I fell in love with culture at a very young age. At 14, I realized my goal in life was to be a professional hip hop dancer and choreograph for the artists I loved so much (Aaliyah, Usher, Missy Elliot). I would make video mixtapes on VHS of Awards Shows, music videos, etc. and learn the choreography verbatim!!! At age 20, I moved to LA to pursue dance professionally and I can definitely say the rest is history and I’m living my dream with titles such as a Professional Dancer, Asst./Co-Choreographer and Choreographer. Some of my credits include City Girls, Quavo, Busta Rhymes, Future, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Tyga, Iggy Azalea, Busta Rhymes, Tory Lanez, Rihanna, Keke Palmer, Will Smith, Russ, Anderson, Paak, Serayah, Zendaya, Toni Braxton, Tisha Campbell, Ginuwine, Snoop Dogg, Jodeci & More. I’ve done feature films and numerous television shows blah blah hahaha. To say the least, I love my job and wouldn’t change it for the world. But I am nothing without the people who gave me the opportunities to shine, my mentors🙌✨

Has it been a smooth road?
Pursuing your passion is never an easy life path. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it, and the fight for what you love is true passion, it’s what makes us an artist. This path is by any means necessary- I WILL survive and I WILL be the highest form of self.

The number one struggle for aspiring professionals is primarily financial. Hoe do you nurture the passion while trying to pay the car note, buy groceries, keep a roof over your head, pay all your parking tickets (lol), etc… I quickly realized I needed a job that was flexible with my lifestyle and made tips…. y’all hear that…. TIPS. Ca$h money, so I learned how to Bartend and that has been the best side hustle I’ve ever had, to this day.

Falling in love was also a distraction of mine but uh… next question 😝

We’d love to hear more about your work.
My name is Michele Soulchild and I am a creative being. I’ve always had an undying passion and natural talent for dance and choreography. Movement is how I let what’s inside go. Some use words, I use space.

I’m very lucky to have had so many incredible mentors along the way. I genuinely recommend all young aspiring dancers find a mentor and learn as much as you can from them. This, for me, is what I am most proud of as a professional, more important to me than any artist or celeb. I was taught by the best, these choreographers changed my life and molded me into a professional and I HAVE to mention them!!!

Thank You to Karen Garman (Mom), Suzy Miller, Johnnie Smith, Chuck Maldonado, Havic Gregory, Rosero McCoy & Oththan Burnside for believing in me and making me better, I adore love and respect each of you ❤️

What sets me apart from others is that I am 100% myself and I am consistent. I’m an Aries and by nature we are leaders. I know who I am and what I want and I give my all to the art.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
100%. For me, I knew the music industry was in LA and I knew I had to be here. I’ve felt an energetic pull to be here since I was a kid. I belong here. WestCoast baby.
