Today we’d like to introduce you to Michele Love Santoro.
Michele, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My start began in production, working full-time for CollegeHumor, where I started as an executive assistant to the head of production and left, four years later, as one of their senior producers. Since then, I’ve made my way as a freelancer, never keeping my eye off my ultimate goals, no matter the opportunities that presented themselves. My resume is vast and I love that. I’ve done more sketch comedy and big brand commercials than I can count. I’ve done cool music videos with artists old and new. I’ve made a ton of narrative content that means something to me, personally. I’ve supported my friends and colleagues by helping bring their personal visions to life. After a decade of this work, and being lucky enough to have companies entrust me with the development and production of their shows, this year felt like the time to truly own what I do, and so, MLS Films was born.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Ha! If by smooth, you mean a long, bumpy, sharp turned Mario Kart track where you pull over to the side of the road and contemplate what you’re doing with your life on a semi-regular basis, then sure! But really, who wants it to be smooth and easy? I don’t know that I believe success is found on the other end of a smooth road, especially when the journey is the fun part. I like the challenge, I like the chase. One of the biggest obstacles that I’ve had to overcome is owning who I am. People want to put you in a box, it’s easier for their brain to understand where to place you and how they can depend on your, and I get that, but also F – that. I am a multi-hyphenate and you can’t put me into a box because I won’t allow it. I act, I write, I direct, I produce, I create and I’ve been training, learning in class and on the job, for many years. Being an actor makes me a better director, being a producer makes me a better writer and so forth. Can we be incredible at everything? Maybe. Maybe not. However, I started MLS Films so that I didn’t need to wait for anyone. I get so much joy out of bringing collaborators together to bring an artistic vision to life whether it be for myself, my colleagues/friends, my clients, and more broadly, people and their ideas. Let’s figure out a way to make it happen!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with MLS Films – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
MLS Films is a production company that specializes in branded content, commercials and short-form narrative. Despite the dumpster fire that 2020 has become, I am so proud to be show running a digital series for a very cool YA app. We’re (quite literally) in the middle of filming four episodes that I had so much fun writing and now I’m beaming with joy as I direct, bringing these characters back to life. The world could use some light-hearted romantic content that makes you blush and feel all the feels and I’m happy to play a role in delivering that to audiences right now.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I just released my latest narrative short, The Long Way, that I’m proud of and I’m ready to make my first feature which I’m currently developing. The hustle never stops! I love what I do and I’m grateful every day that I get to be working in this business. I look up to the badass women ahead of me (Jessica Chastain, Reese Witherspoon, Kerry Washington, Elisabeth Moss, etc!) who have their own production companies and develop/option/create stories they want to tell and I want that, so my big plans are to work my booty off to get there and take my hardworking friends with me.
