Meet Michael Reiken of Aristokat Media in Miracle Mile

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Reiken.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Aristokat Media in my home town in Brisbane, Australia. I moved here in 2011 and began to grow the business. We started to get new clients in all different industries and just grew and grew. I have worked in the film/tv industry at Lionsgate and a few other smaller production companies but felt like I always needed my own creative control and outlet so hence why I started Aristokat Media.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes of course, there are many challenges. Starting your own company is hard. You have to start fresh. I came from a corporate marketing job which is comfortable but it’s the same thing, day after day, no real challenge. I had to re-invent myself and start from the bottom.

Getting new clients is always hard but what I have learned is keeping them long-term, offering exceptional service and going that extra mile compared to the next guy.

Another huge challenge is moving to a whole new country. Los Angeles is a great place for working in film/tv industry, it’s really the mecca of the world – but it’s very competitive! But the opportunities here are endless and abundant. If you work hard, have a good work ethic, treat your clients/colleagues with respect and you make good work – then I believe you will succeed.

Please tell us about Aristokat Media.
We shoot commercials, music videos, events, corporate work, documentaries, branded content, aerials, commercial real estate, social media content, animation, vfx work – you can name it, we do it. We have a full team now with two DPs, editors, VFX department, producer, director and two interns. We do small client work and all the way to bigger projects also. We recently shot Cindy Crawford for a BTS interview project.

We own a RED Scarlet-W 5K camera package, which is really one of the best cameras out there. Truly great quality.

We take pride in good quality content no matter who the client is. All jobs are treated with same level of professionalism, respect and work ethic. We have a great team of professionals and always go the extra mile for our clients. We offer great service to our clients and always make sure they’re happy and all of the time, we get great praise and feedback from our clients.

I’m proud of how far I have built the company and very excited to take on more challenging projects in the future.

We love technology and using new camera tech like VR, 360 and shooting in high resolutions always make us happy.

We also shoot content at the YouTube space in LA for a few channels and are developing some projects there.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory would be going a cruise to the South Pacific islands. Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia – all beautiful places. Spending time on a large cruise ship as a kid was fun. With my cousins we played, ran around the ship and got to visit the best tropical paradises in the world. Always stuck with me.
