Meet Michael Petow

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Petow.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
After being diagnosed with schizophrenia two years ago, I started painting as a form of therapy hoping to release the trauma of delusional thinking and hallucinations I was experiencing daily. Through painting, I started to realize I felt better and a lot of the mental cloudiness went away. Painting then became a tool for psychological transformation and helped by raising my consciousness thru recovery.

Please tell us about your art.
As a painter, my main goal is transformation, both internally through the process, and on the canvas, taking one thing and turning it into another thing. Whether a painting starts as a man and ends up as a woman, or a monster, or even abstract landscapes.

In the same way, the ancient alchemists were trying to turn mundane earth into psychological gold, I attempt the same process, painting as a way to transform my consciousness by transforming the painting in front of me, a lot like a snake shedding its skin and being reborn anew, over and over again

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
Capturing the attention of an audience for more than 30 seconds at a time in the hyper-connected information overloaded world we live in. It’s easy for artists to slip thru the cracks without a good platform to get the work out to the masses.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
On Instagram, I post studies, paintings upcoming events and a look into my daily life and process as an artist. My website is an online Portfolio where you can look at past work and shows and videos. Sign up to receive updates on exhibitions and projects I’ll be participating in.
