Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Knight.
Michael, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It’s a long story, I grew up in the middle of nowhere in south Georgia my family built race cars and were all mechanics of some facet, while I love cars still do and collect and build them I didn’t care much at the time to learn all the stuff they did and would take my time and things I learned on machining and metal fabricating equipment to make jewelry, sculptures anything I saw as a little more creative than machining a bolt or welding an exhaust pipe.
Fast forward a bit to my teens I was rebellious as hell didn’t help going to a conservative Christian school, I started hanging out in tattoo shops and took a job at a shop as a body piercing apprentice, fast forward a bit more and that landed me in LA. I still dabbled with jewelry and making stuff but at that point was still a hobby. One day the girl I was dating wore a necklace I made around her boss and she loved it and wanted one in gold and diamonds, I had no idea what I was doing but said yes and it ended up being quite an expensive piece and I was like “man maybe I should focus on this more” perfect timing too as I had a baby on the way and a body piercers pay on top of the hours were not the most conducive to raising a child and I could work from home so I dove head first in taking shit jobs doing mass stone setting and such for like 20 cent a stone it sucked but let me hone skills and keep the lights on.
Fast forward a bit more I was working for a brand called the great frog then transitioned to making body jewelry wholesale for studios I ended up partnering with a shop though while it didn’t work out its during that time I made my first set of gold teeth, grew up listening to hip-hop pretty heavy I always wanted gold teeth and was like “wait a minute I can figure this out” so I made a set with a black opal inlaid in it and it snowballed from there, the first client that I think really launched my work out there was FKA twigs and from there it kept growing, now so to the point people don’t realize I make way more than gold teeth. At this point the whole operation is me and my girlfriend another talented artist (@summercmoon) I taught her the basics and she ran with it. full on partner in crime and has become a big part of my creative process and keeping things running smoothly.
Has it been a smooth road?
Nope! I think the biggest issue was not knowing anything about how to run a business, being unable to control how much work I take on, when to close my books etc. I’m known for having a long wait because of this but also being pretty anal with quality, you can get a grill made in two days at the swap meet but it’s not going to fit or look as natural a lot of times. And also wanting to keep the operation small has been a hurdle too since say my printer stops working I got to spend the day doing that as opposed to one of the 50 other things that need to be done.
Other Couture – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I like to look at us more as artists than a business or company, we mainly make jewelry but we are a jack and jill of all trades! need a mural painted, car worked on, and engagement ring? we got you covered.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think there’s going to be more of a shift to smaller artists and brands, as big company’s keep slipping on quality and original ideas
