Meet Michael Hale of haleARTS in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Hale.

Michael, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When looking for a new office space in 2011, I found a great space that was zoned as retail. Having a few friends that were artists and being an artist myself, I thought “why not feature our work on the walls” and thus began haleARTS.

We created a mission statement with a goal of providing a fun and comfortable space for local artists to show and sell their work in a professional gallery setting. We wanted to be a space that helped emerging artists get their art career started…. throughout the next 5 years we featured group shows every 2 weeks and launched many emerging artists with their very first show….

We also began to curate a collection of really cool functional art, gifts, books and art supplies. Many from local artists and hand created, unique and not sold anywhere else….

In 2016, we moved our gallery to Santa Monica Place to further enhance our artists exposure to both locals and tourism alike. Today our gallery store features local artists works alongside an expanded collection of carefully curated cool stuff!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our biggest struggle is getting folks to know we are here. Every time we have a new collector find our space, they love it, but being in a space not anchored by other galleries, we are off the beaten path of the art gallery community….

haleARTS – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
In 2015 & 2016 we were nominated and placed as finalist in Buy Local Santa Monica’s Most loved businesses. Knowing the community treasures what we do is such wonderful gift that we are so grateful for….

In 2015, we were awarded the SQA award for Economic development and as an art gallery, that’s not too common. The support we have given to local artists is something we are very proud of….

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Every time an artist who has never shown their work at any gallery before brings some wonderful talent for us to review, we get quite excited. The proudest moment comes when that first-time exhibitor sells his first piece to a collector and we have been a supportive role in making that artists career begin… now that’s a joy so worth the patience and gentle guidance we provide…
