Meet Michael Ferrera of Michael Ferrera Custom Clothing in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Ferrera.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Michael. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always knew I wanted to be a fashion designer from the age of fifteen. Mainly because I never wanted to mold into the standard or norm of all the clothing brands that was in the mainstream. I always thought; why should I wear the same thing and why can’t I just create my own style or designs so I know that it was truly me? So since a kid I knew I would do something related to fashion.

At age eighteen, I started my first clothing line where I designed T-Shirts, jeans, and sweat suits creating my own clothing by embellishing fabrics with other fabrics, dying T-Shirts and simple stuff just to make my own unique clothing. From there while in college at UC Riverside I continued to do the same thing and other people started asking me if I could make them one. At that moment I was like, “this could be real and I could really sell clothes and make money.” So I did exactly that. Even when in school and designing clothes I still had a business mindset so it leads me to just understanding business more to developed the companies that I had. Entrepreneurship has always been my passion and if was interested in being a fashion designer I knew I wanted to be the owner of the company rather than just a designer. After college, I took those skills that I learned in economics and business to full focus on my brand now Michael Ferrera. I went to fashion school for 2 years to learn more about tailoring, pattern making and sewing primarily to enhance my design skills. I felt if I understood more of what the manufacturers were doing it could help me design better.

My technical company Michael Ferrera Custom Clothing was created in 2007 with the intention of designing custom suits, ties and menswear for guys that wanted to look impeccable in their wardrobe. I started to build relationships with all the major fabric mills around the globe and I learned how the business worked and I began selling to people I know. I kept building and growing my clientele until I got the chance to work with some NBA and NFL athletes that really made my entrepreneurship journey exciting while making money.

The main thing for me as a designer is making my clients look and feel amazing. I understand that they rely on me for creativity in the norm of pants and a jacket. The cool factor I bring to my clients is I understand their lifestyle. If they are left handed I make pen pockets that make their life easier. If I have a client that carries an iPad, tablet or something special all the time, I make a pocket of that so that his life is easier. Special occasions like weddings and children celebrations we create fancy linings with photos inside the jacket to make unforgettable moments. I truly live life every day to make unforgettable moments for the people that I am around and I believe I get to do that by continuously being unique and creative.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Never is it a smooth road and if it was it would not be as fun. Roller coasters aren’t as fun when it’s a flat level in a smooth round oval. As all companies have, we’ve had some exciting moments and not so exciting moments. One of the biggest excitements was when we tripled revenue in 2010 from what it was the year before. However, as we started to notice our sweet spot of serving clients in started to level off. I truly believe when something starts to level off it becomes boring. So we were struggling to meet deadlines, get more clients and grow the company for about 2 years but I knew this is what I was called to do. So what I dead was go back to what made me successful in 2010 and looked at what I was doing then that made me successful. One of those things have nothing to do with clothing at all. At that time I was working with a business coach named Nate Brooks that helped me with creative ideas to grow my business. So I went back to Nate and asked him to train me again. As I started this I notice trends and new ideas flowing that put me in the right mindset to take my company to even higher levels.

Michael Ferrera the brand has and is evolving to much more than clothing and fashion. We specialize in custom men’s suits and shirts but it’s more of a lifestyle brand than just clothing. Our truly unique characteristic as a men’s fashion designer is personalization on the inside of our jackets and pants. We make one of a kind pieces that on the outside look like an amazing suit and on the inside look like a rock star showing off your personality. In addition to clothing we have evolved to teaching workshops to universities and corporations on image, style and gentlemen’s etiquette, We also offer full service stylist consulting to enhance the live of clients going to a higher level with professional recommendations and style tips

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Not do it alone. I started my clothing line Michael Ferrera with my own capital and own knowledge. It sounds good but not always the best strategy. I had mentors in the business but probably would have been more open to a partner or working with other people to grow the company. I probably would have explored more opportunities for business capital rather than my own. Not that it was necessary but It could have helped.
