Meet Michael Elliot of Hammer & Nails Grooming Shop for Guys in Melrose Ave.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Elliot.

Michael, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in the inner city of Philadelphia with an abusive family that was functionally poor, making home life quite difficult. When I was 16-years-old, I became a ward of the state and found myself moving from youth shelters to boy’s homes. When I turned 18, I was no longer the responsibility of the state. It was time to start thinking big picture – money, food, housing – and so I dropped out of high school so I could start working. I spent a few years drifting around Philadelphia, sleeping in friends’ basements, on the Subway and on street benches, until one day a stranger, a real-life angel, gave me a room to rent.

I was determined to beat the statistics bound to homeless teens and make something of myself. I went on to excel in the hip-hop industry with published magazines, taught myself how to write screenplay – 20th Century Fox bought my first script ‘Brown Sugar’ and then ‘Like Mike’ and finally, I pursued entrepreneurship.

The idea for Hammer & Nails, stemmed from my own experience at a nail salon while getting a pedicure. Many males feel a sense of unease when entering a women’s nail salon and can feel not only judged but completely out of place. It was in this moment that I realized, my next big idea was to create a male spa – insert the birth of Hammer & Nails Grooming Shop for Guys.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Launching a new business can be a daunting feat that has many ups and downs. From this experience, I learned two lessons: Do your research and just start!

First, research. Whatever it is you are trying to bring to market, there are successful entrepreneurs that were once in your shoes. Take the time to research their journey – learn what challenges they faced, how they were overcome and best practices for success. These lessons learned will help prepare you for what’s ahead.

Second, just start. Many entrepreneurs never fully pursue their passion because the unknown prevents them from accomplishment. Just because you don’t have all the steps figured out doesn’t mean you should just start. Without the first step, there will be no second or third…

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Hammer & Nails Grooming Shop for Guys story. Tell us more about the business.

After offering a franchise opportunity in 2015, the brand has awarded licenses for more than 200 shops and is working to have 250 locations open and operating by 2022.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck but I do believe in God, which means that for me, nothing is accidental but is a result of my faith, fearlessness and hard work. Some of the things that have happened to my business along the way could look a lot like good luck. From being invited to appear on Shark Tank just five weeks after I opened my business to receiving over 40 emails from strangers wanting to be angel investors in my business. But to me, it is all a result of stepping out on faith, believing a higher power and trusting a divine plan that’s bigger than me.
