Meet Mia Makris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Makris.

Mia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am from a small town in the San Gabriel Valley called Temple City. Both of my parents run their own businesses so I grew up going to work with both of them. My mother does property management in the city of Los Angeles so I know LA like the back of my hand because I would be in the car going to work with her every day. Since I grew up in the car, I am a very adventurous person and I love to travel and try new things! My father owns a restaurant so I have been exposed to different foods and people. With this combination of going to work with my mother and being at my dad’s restaurants it has given me the curious nature to explore the world. I have been to 23 out of the 50 states and I have been fortunate enough to travel to 10 countries. I am a Graphic Design major with a minor in Geography and I attribute that to the fact that I have been exposed to so much from a young age. I hope one day to work at a company that will allow me to continue meeting interesting people and travel to unique places.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Growing up, I was very fortunate even though I had to work for everything I achieved. I cannot say that I had to face hardships to get to where I am today.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
One way that I express my artist side outside of school is that I paint and draw. My favorite thing to paint is shoes because it is not very common. I started painting shoes because I wanted to give a friend a very unique birthday gift. Next thing I know all my friends wanted custom painted shoes, and they were even willing to pay me. I started an Instagram account where I would post the shoes I would paint. Eventually, I started to get messages from people asking me to paint their shoes. Every pair I paint is unique because they are hand-painted. This is a small little hobby of mine that turned into an interesting mini business.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I remember being very outgoing, adventurous, and curious. I was never really afraid to try new things or step out of my comfort zone. I was more interested in being outside than inside because I wanted to explore. Even as a kid I remember I always wanted to travel. Every summer, my family would plan a vacation to a new place, and I remember being so excited that we were going to see something new. When I was inside, my favorite thing to do was draw or build Legos. I could spend hours building different Lego sets because I saw them as one giant puzzle that turned into a toy when I would finish.
