Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Campbell.
Mia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started out in advertising – following my collegiate journey at UC, Berkeley, I jumped straight into my intended career field. I quickly realized, however, that I needed to pursue what was in my heart- a career in fashion.
I started a fashion blog in 2011, PinkGrasshopper www.mypinkgrasshopper.com, and from there I was on a ride of a lifetime. I began getting invites to the hottest events around LA, brands were interested in collaboration, I became a stylist and I even landed my own online fashion segment with VIBE Magazine- VIBE Vixen Style Profile.
Even with all of that, I was still working at my 9-5. I knew I wanted to do more, so I started working on a clothing line. I developed, what I call The New White Tee, but given the complexity of starting your own business and learning the fashion industry, from development to conception, I did not launch right away. I tested the market and researched for a very long time.
In the meantime, I met my now fiancé who showed me the ropes in the custom jewelry business. While still a lot of work (even more than in fashion development), and very complex, I launched sooner than I could my clothing line, with his help.
KING ME, my custom jewelry brand, is now running itself, and has garnered celebrity interest & worldwide. I was blessed to have a profit in my 1st year in business. I continue to have consistent sales and there’s now more interest than ever.
Basically Clothing, which launched just last year (2017) is still growing but with my current consumer base, I’m blessed to have had a successful launch and now I’m on to the release of my second collection.
I’m happy to have come full circle, to a place where I no longer work a 9-5, but run profitable businesses, with a few more ventures on the horizon.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I definitely did not have a smooth road. My biggest struggle was balancing a 9-5 and becoming an entrepreneur. It was tough because I wanted so much more than working for someone else, but I had to use my place of work as motivation, my investor (a paycheck), and to hone in on skills I needed to be on my own.
Time was not on my side, so I made the most of every minute I was not working for someone else. From connecting with others & researching to learning skills that would make me more resourceful, I made sure everything I did had something to do with my goals. If it did not make sense to my bigger picture, I did not think twice about it.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with KING ME Custom Jewelry & Basically Clothing by PinkGrasshopper. – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My 1st business is KING ME Custom Jewelry. I specialize in custom & customizable high-quality jewelry, made in Los Angeles. My business is unique because it’s available online, a fast and convenient way to order, where you have an opportunity to customize designs by me just the way you want them. There’s also an option to come up with designs on your own, and I create them for you from scratch. All the while, my prices are affordable and customer service is A+
Basically Clothing is a premium basics line, featuring THE NEW WHITE TEE. It’s a t-shirt that’s not boxy like most tees but is a relaxed fit, cut to accentuate your curves. It’s made of a breathable fabric that is very soft and drapes to hug you in the right place, yet allows for comfort all over.
As I mentioned previously, I started out as a blogger but that took the backseat when I hit the ground running with my jewelry & clothing businesses. I’m slowly getting back to what I’m known for and look forward to launch a 3rd business, which will expand my blogger platform.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I look forward to Basically being in more stores- right now I’m in one on Melrose. I also have plans to expand KING ME, allowing for ways to customize.
Moreover, I have plans for at least two more businesses, one to reboot my fashion styling expertise and another in beauty, which are currently in the works!
