Meet Mi-Ri El Khoury of Mi-Ri Moonlight in Sherman Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mi-Ri El Khoury.

Mi-Ri, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Tarot intrigued me from a very young age. That you might have the ability to see into the future and have the power to change it. I always believed in magic, like most kids do, but I really, really wanted it to be real. I had the Magic 8 Ball, I wore the dragon and faerie glitter wish necklaces, I wished on the Treasure Troll bellies, I even took some of the messages on the Cootie Catcher/Paper Fortune Teller games to be true. I was always looking to believe.

I played cards with my father and sisters, so finding out that something ordinary like a deck of cards could allow me a glimpse into the future was exciting. I didn’t know anything about the different types of decks you could get, and I can remember spending hours at the library looking for books about the Tarot and trying to teach myself (though I’m not much of a self-learner in that way).

The idea of connecting with mystical forces dazzled me, and my room was littered with books about past lives, parallel universes, and native spirits. I constantly adorned myself with fairy wings (when I was “too old” to), glitter and mixed and matched patterns and colors to channel other energies I felt I was a part of. I was looking for a way to get into the flow.

The culture that I grew up in didn’t really allow for much play in that magical space, so aside from going to medium shops to get readings every once in a while, it wasn’t really until my adulthood, when I was already in my 30’s, that I connected with my first real guide, Scott K. Smith of Temple Los Angeles. I had been looking for a Reiki practitioner to learn from and was led to Scott by a friend.

I checked out his website and saw that he was going to be offering a Year and a Day Witchcraft book study and immediately got the sense that this was going to be my next step. I’d never considered witchcraft specifically before, so I was surprised by how bonded and thrilled I felt with that word once I read it. So my sister and I signed up.

Through that class and the people that I bonded and connected with there, I really learned how to go within to unearth my true self, to see what got my inner flame going, and I learned how to see and accept my ego and shadow self and to work toward the greater good.

Now, after my second initiation, I’m about to enter my third year. It was during the second year that I had discovered the Tarot was my natural divination tool. I really love when life just comes around like that! Magick!

Throughout my life, I had been led to paths that involved performing with an element of storytelling, from my love of mythology to touring and performing as a tribal bellydancer and then from public speaking in Toastmasters to wedding officiating. I really connected to the modality of the story and its ability to really speak to folks. To see how each individual interpreted the story and got something special and unique from it and sometimes how it healed. Tarot became another way for me to do that.

So I dove right in, despite resisting my own path for a year or so, and now I read Tarot for people in private, at events and I also offer free one-card pulls for the community live on YouTube, 8 pm PST on Sunday nights under the name Mi-Ri Moonlight.

I chose moonlight, not only because of my Cancer Sun and Moon signs but because I love that the moonlight illuminates the mysteries hiding in the dark, in your dreams. Just enough light to see the path ahead, but not enough to give it away. And I like the hope that can be felt with the promise of the sunlight coming soon. I did also end up learning Reiki 1, and I include that as another healing modality.

Has it been a smooth road?
I really believe in divine timing. Everything I experienced, including the things that I, at the time, might have felt was “holding me back” from the healing path I ultimately ended up on, I know that it all happened because I wouldn’t have been ready for it any other way.

There were definitely times when I would long for the magical life I saw so many others around me living, but I’m not mad at the time it took for me to get to where I am today. I acquired so many skills and lives in my 36 years, and without those experiences, I just wouldn’t have been at the maturity level I’m at to really do the good that I’m meant to do with this.

So I don’t see my road as having been smooth or bumpy. It was the road I needed to get where I am today. My time is now, and my only struggle was with finding patience, haha! That and trusting my intuition to bond with the people that I met and to take the opportunities that came my way.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mi-Ri Moonlight story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m known for my calming presence. It’s been said to me countless times throughout my entire life and I never really took it to mean much because I didn’t see how it could be translated into a career.

I’d been a chef and a bellydancer for 15+ years, and I would put on events from time to time, so I was kind of known for that. But even in those experiences, it was the Hakuna Matata, no worries vibe that I brought with me to every kitchen, stage or event that people would often comment on and how it affected them. That, and that I was always pretty optimistic, positive, confident and smiley. I’ve also been known to be really ridiculous in a cartoony way.

Now being in a space where I can see the beneficial healing effect of my natural presence for others, I’m inspired to BE, even more than I ever have been. To take space with others, whether in person or on the phone or internet, if I’m giving Reiki, a Tarot reading, or just sitting quietly with them, I bring that calming energy with me.

My vibration is running at a higher frequency now to be able to channel spiritual assistance, but I’d also say that it vibrates at a slower, more soothing rate instead of quick and static-like, to facilitate a better healing environment for each person.

I’ve also been known to be a chameleon, so I can adjust my vibration to match or balance the vibration of the person I’m with and together we can work it up or down to the level that they intuitively need. So I guess you could say that as Mi-Ri Moonlight I’m specializing in getting healthy vibes going through Reiki and Tarot so that you can get past whatever’s challenging your natural thrive.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Still being so new to the industry of spiritual healing in one way — though in another way having been part of it through many past lives — I only see that its necessity is never-ending.

There will always healers and those that seek to be healed in one way or another. I have noticed the trend of awareness that is blossoming as of late, and I believe that will continue to grow as this awakened generation births the next and as acceptance and open-mindedness continues to inspire conversation and interest.

In experiencing my first pregnancy now, I’m even more aware of the opportunities for my son when he arrives on this Earth to find his own way with diminishing opposition or hate.

Being a go-with-the-flow kinda gal, I could never really see that big picture. I have my tribe, guides and intuition to clue me in on the macrocosm while I deal in the microcosm.

I do see more of the puzzle pieces fitting together. I love puzzles and seeing each piece being placed to create the whole picture. I just hope to see as much of it as I can in this life.
