Meet Melissa Samayoa of M.E.S-Makeup in South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Samayoa.

Melissa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started in high school doing my cousin’s makeup for her dance competitions. I decided to enroll myself in a cosmetology program and there, I met a professor that recommended makeup school. After I graduated high school, I decided to attend Make-up Designory in Burbank. I got my diploma in 2010 and since then, I’ve been freelancing. With a couple of years in the business, I also developed my photography skills and sense of style to go on and plan my own shoots.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are two main struggles I’ve had to deal with. Having to find work that offers monetary payment; lots of clients want to trade makeup services for print or exposure. I completely understand for upcoming artists, trading work for work may make sense but not when you have lots of experience in the field. Second is negotiating rates. Lots of clients want A-rate services but don’t want to pay the fees.

Please tell us about M.E.S-Makeup.
I’m most proud of having an open-mind and going with the flow by giving things a chance. Not only am I aspiring to make it as a makeup artist but I’m also trying to create a business that would take all my skills and become a resource for anybody hoping to create media content. Whether a client needs my services for set design, styling, hairstyling, photography or makeup, M.E.S-Makeup can be contacted for partnership. While still in the works, I am hoping to soon also add videography to the list of available services.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have developed skills outside of makeup, sooner (photography, set design, hairstyling). I would also have networked since my earlier years.
