Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Goodwin.
Melissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, I always knew that I had an obsession with clothes and art. My mom was a creative, a seamstress, and her talents rubbed off on me effortlessly. As a teenager, my favorite classes were art and photography, and any opportunity that I could make a class project into something fashion related I was on it. College brought me into a world of graphic design. And even though the artist in me enjoyed creating digital beauty, I began gravitating towards the fashion industry. In 2009, I began interning for fashion companies, taking fashion merchandising classes and most importantly starting a style blog called Clothes Minded, where I was able to capture my style in photos and creatively write about the look.
After college, I began working for big retailers and corporate apparel companies, getting an experience of a lifetime. Over time, I realized that even though my corporate life was providing a lifestyle that many would love to have, I needed to break away and get back to being the creative I felt called to be. From starting off as just a simple style blog, the Live Clothes Minded brand is now growing branches towards helping others confidently express who they truly are through personal style.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Finding our passion and purpose in life is not easy. Even to this day I feel like I am still discovering and uncovering the real reasons why I am on this planet. Coming from a humbling environment as a kid, I was taught to reach far and go past my surroundings. Be better. Be educated. Go get the things that were not so easy for my mom to get in order to provide a better childhood for me. So that is what I have always done, and also what I think a lot of my peers have experienced as well. However, somewhere along the way, we get caught up in the physical and egotistical things of this world. Easily distracting ourselves from what we are really meant to do while we are alive. I know that we are all on a path to finding ourselves, and along that path we are meant to serve a specific purpose in a way that is unique to us and our talents. A smooth road, every now and then. Struggles along the way, of course. But this is life’s journey to finding who we are. A constant balancing act to being the best most contributing versions of ourselves.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Live Clothes Minded – what should we know?
Live Clothes Minded, or how I like to refer to it, “LCM” is a blog dedicated to inspiring others to be who they are through the clothes that they own and wear. The idea of “Wear Who You Are” is something that I think everyone can connect to. Everyday we have to get up and put on SOMETHING. Whatever that something is should visually speak to others about us. Even if it’s a work or school uniform, how you wear it says everything about that individual. LCM is also a place where I like to offer my personal fashion and style/hair tips in the form of articles with creative images taken by myself and also my fiancé. In addition to writing and creating content for LCM, I also do personal shopping/styling, closet makeovers and fabric design. Designing prints for fabric is my newest endeavor. I’ve only been doing it for about three years now, collaborating with a fashion designer to create prints for her line. My dream is to eventually have my own line of clothing, and maybe other items created from my print designs. My love for writing and creating beautiful content is probably what I am most proud of at the moment. Eventually, I want to make my fabric designs my biggest focus and a way to spread the “Wear Who You Are” concept.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Like I mentioned before, my fiancé, @rsee takes most of my outfit photos. He is a professional photographer and knows how to capture me in a way that executes my visions. Also being someone who supports all my endeavors, he’s been a huge supporter and encourager in my journey. My friend and colleague, fashion designer @lolawusu has been someone who has helped me gain experience in the industry as well as helped me step outside of my comfort zones. She has been a person who has helped me get quite a few of my “first” time opportunities that have lead me to where I am now. My client @rhagoddess is someone who I look up to as a mentor and am very grateful to be apart of her personal entrepreneurial journey gaining amazing experience as her personal stylist and shopper. Frankly, my sisters and anyone who I call a friend and spend one on one time with have been huge supporters in my journey. A lot of talks and ideas coming from friends have been the reasons why I proudly do what I do. And last but not least, my mom is the sole reason I am a creative and love clothes in the first place. Her love for sewing is what sparks the energy behind my inspiration to create.
