Meet Melanie Baker of Bake Me a Cake in Santa Clarita

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Baker.

Melanie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started making cakes about six years ago. I am a dental hygienist and when I went out on maternity leave with my 3rd child, I really started dabbling in cake. I decided to start my business as my skills got better. I learned by doing and seeing what worked for me and watching videos and taking classes with some well know cake artists. I take pride in being a perfectionist and delivering not only beautiful but delicious cakes.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s always a struggle balancing three children a husband, being a Girl Scout leader helping at school and working dental. I love all my madness in my life. It keeps me going. However, I love cake and love to learn and come up with new ideas or techniques. I was also chosen as a 40 under forty winner in 2016 here in scv. I was very honored to receive that award. I also was selected to be on Food Network for the show Halloween Cake Off with Duff Goldman. My episode was Monsters Wedding. It was a huge challenge! Such an amazing experience and a great way to have to think outside the box.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bake Me a Cake – what should we know?
My business is Bake Me a Cake. I am the owner and I do everything! No one helps me everything is done by me. I love doing structure cakes. I also do simple cakes to wedding cakes. Any design is welcome. I especially enjoy working with a client to design an original cake. It means a lot when a client wants to create something new. I am very proud of how far I’ve come in just six years. I’ve was on Food Network and got to meet Duff Goldman which is a check off my bucket list. What sets me apart is that I am a legal home-based bakery that specializes in perfection and quality. I take pride in every cake I make no matter how small or large. Every client is special to me.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The most important quality, I believe is patience and kindness. Working with the public can be very difficult but I think as a person, you need to respect everyone you come across. Everyone has different wants and needs with price points and I try my best to meet that. I also believe in giving back as much as possible. I’m a sugar angel for icing smiles. I also will do cakes for children or families that are ill. I also used to make birthday cakes for the foster facility five acres in Altadena.
