Meet Meghan Pratt of Meghan Valerie Hair & Makeup in Southern California

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Pratt.

Meghan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have known since I was 8 years old that styling hair was going to be my career, I never imagined anything different. I have always been fascinated by anything related to beauty and immediately couldn’t wait to head to beauty school right after high school. I started out working in a salon assisting right out of school learning cut and color but something was missing for me. Once I started freelancing as a bridal hair and makeup artist in 2012 I knew I had found my true calling. All of my hard work and dedication to working as an artist in the wedding industry while simultaneously pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business Entrepreneurship at Cal State Fullerton led up to me launching my bridal beauty business in 2017 and making this a full-time dream come true. I still can’t get over that I get to wake up every day to a job I am so in love with.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For me hair has always come naturally, that’s why I knew I loved it and this would ultimately be my career so in that sense the decision was easy. Working in an industry full of women definitely has its challenges. Starting at the young age of 19 I always noticed I loved working in smaller type of environments connecting with a few people at a time and building genuine connections with likeminded people in the industry vs working in larger salons. The cliquey stereotype working with a lot of women is definitely evident and real and something I didn’t want to be a part of but had to learn for myself. On the business side, growing my business full time definitely brought on its own set of challenges. Being your own boss, finding the right work-life balance and consistently maintaining and operating a business is a consistent challenge that takes so much hard work, discipline, dedication and passion, but a challenge I am grateful for every day.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Meghan Valerie Hair & Makeup – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
A little taste of who I am: I’m a lover of love and all things beauty. I consider myself a versatile artist but I really love to create natural beauty looks with a boho edge. I am inspired by love and life quotes, textured hair styles and learning from this industry best. I’ve always believed in the power of knowledge and with the help of receiving my Bachelor’s degree in Business Entrepreneurship from Cal State Fullerton, it has helped me lead me to where I am today.

I am just thrilled to get to wake up and create new looks every day and get to pursue my dream of making women feel beautiful. I am truly honored when a woman chooses me as her hair and makeup artist for her wedding day, the connection and intimate moments I get to spend with a bride on her wedding day I will truly cherish.

I am a people person at heart. I love meeting new people in the beauty industry, in life and new clients. I think being raised by parents who instilled good values in me really sets me apart because I know how to deal with every type of client and respect them.

I also think the other factor that sets me a part is really understanding the business side of things from receiving a college education at one of the top business schools in California that totally kicked my butt. Knowing how to successfully market myself with no paid advertising, keeping track of finances and operations and doing all the admin work behind the scenes as a one-person show is something I really value in myself and creates credibility to my clients that I am a true professional.

I am very proud that I am a young driven artist and business owner who is self-motivated and continues to take risks in pursuit of reaching further and making my business the best it can be.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am such a planner in my daily life but right now growing and nurturing my relationships and my business is my priority. Being only a year into running my business full time I definitely plan to keep growing my bridal clientele and making more income every year. I do often think about in 5 years from now where I’ll be and how things will be different. Who knows I could be married and have a kid by then! I do often consider hiring a team of artists to work for me on a consistent basis since I am very busy or becoming a business coach for hairstylist so we will see what the future holds!
